Wallingford 350th Descendants Committee Honors Major Lufbery's 100th Annniversary

Wallingford 350th Jubilee Descendants Committee recognized the 100th anniversary of the demise of Major Gervais Raoul Lufbery.  A special military parade and monument dedication ceremony was held at the Wallingford Historical Society,  at 180 South Main Street in Wallingford, Connecticut.

About Major Gervais Raoul Lufbery:

During WWI Major Lufbery was an outstanding military pilot and the highest scoring Ace of the famous Lafayette Escadrille. This flying squadron was made up of 38 American volunteers who fought with French combat forces for nearly two years before the United States officially entered the Great War. He was the first American flying ace in WWI, and a former resident of Wallingford, Connecticut.

           

About the Procession: Parade 11:00 - 11:06 a.m.

The Governor's First Company and the Second Company of the Connecticut National Guard led a procession of dignitaries and Lufbery family descendants from South Main Street (Town Hall) to the Wallingford Historical Society at 180 South Main Street.


About the Ceremony: 11:06 - a.m. - 11:45 a.m.

The ceremony includes scheduled remarks from Wallingford Mayor William Dickinson, Emcee Al Terzi, legislators and a Lufbery family descendant. The Lufbery family presents the monument (2’ x 3’ foot bronze tablet)  and a special flag presentation to the Wallingford Historical Society. The VFW Post 591 hosts a reception immediately following the ceremony.


Dignitaries included National guard members, including General Thaddeus Martin, Town Veterans Organizations: Post 73 American Legion, Post 187 American Legion, Post 9965 VFW, Post 591 VFW Major Raoul Lufbery (host post), State Senator Len Fasano, State Representative Vincent Candelora and Mary Mushinsky, State Representative and Town Councilor Craig Fishbein, and Town Councilors Chairman Cervoni, Laffin, Shortell, Zandri, Letourneau and Morgenstein.

Lufbery Family Descendants: Raoul Lufbery III and wife Lynn, -Paul Lufbery and wife Veronica, Marion Lufbery Miller and husband Christopher, Sharon Lufbery Welch and husband Richard, Lisa Riotte Powers (Lufbery) and husband Paul  (Lisa’s mother was Doris Lufbery Riotte), Christine Miller (daughter of Marion Lufbery Miller), Ken Miller (son of Marion Lufbery Miller) Steven Lufbery and wife Amber (son and daughter-in-law of Paul Lufbery), Laurie Riotte Ewers (Lufbery) and husband Joe, Robert L Stickle , Brewster, Ma , husband of late wife, Diana Lufbery Stickle,  Great Niece of Major Lufbery, Randi -Lyn Stickle Scheffler and husband John Scheffler, South Boston , Ma , Great, Great Niece of Major Lufbery.

Wallingford 350th Jubilee Descendants Committee will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the demise of Major Gervais Raoul Lufbery.  A special military parade and monument dedication ceremony will commence at 11 a.m. - 12N at the Wallingford Historical Society,  at 180 South Main Street in Wallingford, Connecticut.

Her leadership role will help to organize community and organization resources to help support the Jubilee events, planned for June 20-27, 2020. Wallingford 350th Committee announces the formation of a new volunteer committee! Chaired by Lori Cooke - Marra, this committee will help to resource volunteers to the major event committees and connect our town's various school, organization and town groups to our Jubilee.
