But before we do, let's make a Note Mobile."

Buddy, this is what we did - just follow along with me.

We'll need scissors, paper, crayons, glue, and some string.

Here is what we'll make:

Can you draw one big fat circle on a sheet of white paper?

Don't rush.

Next, let’s put 2 more papers behind this page with a circle, to cut out 3 big circles.

Hold them tight. Go ahead - cut them out.

Done? Great.

Let us cut some more. Take your first big circle, and fold it in the middle. Cut it.

How many pieces did you get?

2? Are they about the same size?

Yes?

These are called halves. You got 2 halves. Can you put them next to each other to make a whole circle again?

Here is a picture of a half-moon:

OK. Good.

Now, can you write whole on the back of your first big circle?

Can you write half on the back of each of 2 halves you cut out?

Great!

Let us do some more cutting. Take your third whole big circle you cut out, and fold it in the middle.

Now, fold it in the middle again.

Done?

Open up your circle now. How many the same size pieces do you see we can cut out now?

4? Yes! Each piece is a quarter of the whole circle, or 1 of 4 equal pieces.

Can you cut these 4 pieces out now?

Done?

Now, color each of these 4 pieces black or any color you like, and write quarter on the other side of each piece.

Excellent!

Also, please write 1,2,3,4 under the word whole. It means that you have to count to 4 when you play a whole note.

What is a half of 4?

2? Guess what count you should right on the back of the half note?

That's right - 1,2.

And what is a half of 2?

Yes, 1 - that is what you can right on the back of the quarter note. Count to 1.

Now you got almost all the pieces for your Note Mobile. You only need to cut out 6 straight strips of paper for your quarter and half notes.

After you cut them out, glue them to your quarter and half notes, as if they were flower stems, but pointing up instead of down.

Almost done.

Now the last part. Connect them with a string, or just glue with the stems, as in the picture of the Note Mobile:
