What is it?
DOTDOA uses your birthday to acquire and read a numerological reading for you for the day, then provides a playlist to act as your sound track for the day. The fortunes are provided by tarot.com. Visit them for more readings!
DOTDOA is a Macintosh application, and requires Mac OS X 10.6.6 or greater
How do I get it?
The app was available in the app store for about a year, but I have since removed it, and made it a free download from this page. See the download link in the left navigation page.
How does it work?
DOTDOA looks up your reading for the day based on your birthday, then plays a playlist for you based on that reading. You can get your playlists from either Pandora (my music set, or your own), or from iTunes directly. By default, DOTDOA asks what playlist to use (and defaults to the Pandora playlists I have set up). You can set which music source to use in the Preference page of the app.
You will need to have your birthday noted in your personal address book card or in the Preference page.
If you are going to use iTunes as your music source you will need to have the 'Enable access for assistive devices' turned on in the "Universal Access" control panel in order for DOTDOA to work. You will also need to have activated the Genius features in iTunes.
The first run the app DOTDOA, when iTunes is the source, will create a new folder in iTunes including nine playlist within that folder. After that you need to put at least one song in each playlist that represents the moods below:
* "Adaptable, Tactful, Gentle, Cautious"
* "Encompassing a love for all, Compassion, Patience, Selfless"
* "Expansive, Sociable, Dramatic, Diversified, Creative"
* "Family and Social Responsibility, Service, Healing"
* "Form, Work, Order, Practicality, Discipline"
* "Masculine, Creative, Independent, Aggressive"
* "Power, Responsibility, Good Judgment, Financial Rewards"
* "Quiet, Insightful, Analytical, Mystical, Intuitive"
* "Resourceful, Adventure, Speculation, Travel"
The more songs you have in each playlist that capture the moods above, the more options The Fates will have to choose just the right song for you. The songs you choose should all generate genius playlists (we can't expect Fate to have better musical tastes than Apple, after all).
How do I get the songs on my iPod/iPhone:
This is currently only supported for iTunes as your music source. Under the DOTDOA folder in iTunes, you should have a playlist called 'Todays Playlist from beyond!' which will hold the latest playlist DOTDOA created for you. You can tell your iPod/iPhone to synch that playlist as you would any other playlist.
What about Personal Pandora stations?
If you choose Personal Pandora, there is a spot for you to list the URLs to the Pandora stations you would like to use for each of the Moods that DOTDOA knows about (be sure to use new names for your own playlist, so that Pandora does not get confused). Basically, you just need to create a Pandora Playlist for each of the moods, using songs you think capture that mood. Then copy the URL from each station, and paste it into the right spot in the Preferences window of DOTDOA.
What if I have suggestions for the public Pandora stations?
Send them to me in email <email@example.com> and I will add them if they fit :).
Who are you? Who did this?
I do a bit of scripting for fun, and thought I would share out this app. I got some great help from Craig S. (code and planning), and Jacob M. (all the artwork). Thanks guys!
