Cold Weather

Please remember to dress your children appropriately (jackets, mittens and hats) cold weather. When there are snowy conditions in the fields, students who are not dressed appropriately (snowpants and boots) will not be allowed into the field areas to play at recess time. They will only be allowed to play outside on the blacktop area.

Dress Code

Please be mindful of the school dress code concerning clothing that is revealing. Tank tops, low-cut tops, and bare midriffs are not appropriate for school. Excessively short skirts and shorts as well as pants that hang too low are also prohibited. Sneakers or shoes that convert to roller skates are not allowed on school property due to safety concerns. Any attire which has discriminatory or harassing language or interferes with students’ learning or feelings of safety should be left at home. Please follow the link for a note from our Assistant Principal, Mary Heal (PDF)

The lost and found items are beginning to multiply. Please check the rack and hampers located outside the office for missing items. Unclaimed items are donated monthly, so please check frequently.

Child Find

South Portland has the responsibility to ensure that all students between the ages of 3 and 20 years, (including state wards, state agency clients, students attending private schools in the district, students who are home schooled, and institutional residents who reside within the city) and who are in need of special education and supportive services, are identified, located and evaluated. Please click here.

Volunteer News

At the South Portland Schools we welcome our parent and community volunteers! There are many ways you can be involved. As the safety and security of our students and staff is of utmost importance, we ask that before you begin volunteering , you fill out the volunteer application form (please fill out a new one every year). We also ask that you participate in a Volunteer Orientation that addresses the issues of confidentiality, safety and security, emergency precautions, school expectations and procedural guidelines. (This needs to be attended only once.) We also want to make sure that you find a volunteer activity that is mutually rewarding for you and the students!

Information and applications are available in the main office, and if you have any questions about volunteering, please contact:

The Mileage Club

Skillin School has continued this program during lunch-recess called The Mileage Club. The main goal of this program is to get students exercising more. Any student who would like to participate can walk, jog, or run laps around the field at school. For every lap that the students complete, they are given one “Skillin buck” (2-5), or they receive a stamp for their milage card (K-1). They can exchange their money or stamps for prizes. So far the program has been very successful. Students are earning a lot of money or stamps and getting in shape. Keep up the good work Skillin students!
