Waitarere Beach

Waitarere is a popular swimming beach, having lifeguards on patrol over the summer months. About a 15 minute walk southward down the beach will take you to the wreck of the Hydrabad which ran aground during a severe storm in 1878. The wreck sat for many years in the water, however, as the coastline at Waitarere is increasing seawards, these days it only just protrudes from the high tide mark at the foot of sand dunes.

There are several walking and mountain bike tracks through the forest. At the Southern end of Rua Avenue you can enter the forest and walk all the way to Hokio Beach which is located South of Levin. However, if your sense of direction is not great, it may pay to take along a compass. At the North end of the forest there are a number of tracks and roads to follow and it is possible to walk or cycle up to the Manawatu Estuary, which is approximately 10 kilometres each way.

Waitarere has an abundance of pipis, cockles and tuatuas. If surf casting or boating your main catch will be Kahawai, Red Cod, Tarakihi and Snapper. In season, whitebait can be found in the river at the North end of the beach.
