Obituary ~ Joe Bearpark

31st January 1937 – 17th June 2018

Joe Bearpark was a founder member of Activ 8’s SDC when it opened in January 2000 and learned to dance there with his wife, Kath. A few years later he also started coming to Waggoners with his friend, Maggie, who most people thought was his wife …. until the real Mrs Bearpark  turned up!

Joe was very keen on quoting the definitions of Square Dancing moves and loved Hot Hashes. He was an enthusiastic participant in the annual Waggoners Open Mic nights, over the years performing “Girls! Girls! Girls!”, “City of New Orleans” and others. He had his favourite singing calls among them “Mississippi”, “Humming Bird”, and especially “Y.M.C.A.” but would let Simon and Trudy know if he thought they had wasted their time learning a new song!

Joe and Kath attended several of the Waggoners weekends away in Felixstowe and with Activ 8’s learned the Plus and A1 programs.

Joe liked to give the impression of being a gruff Yorkshireman but he will be sadly missed by all at Waggoners and Activ 8’s especially the single ladies who enjoyed dancing with him.

I myself will always think of him at Christmas when we get out the stained glass ornaments which Joe made to be sold in aid of charity and whenever I hear “Y.M.C.A.”

Our thoughts are with Kath and your lovely family.

Janet Hewitt

Secretary, Waggoners S.D.C. and member of Activ 8’s S.D.C.
