The Races in Detail

This brief guide to the races is provided for the interest of those not familiar with Point to Pointing. For precise entry details, owners must refer to the official literature.

A day’s racing consists five or six of the following races: 


Members Race – for horses owned by members of the hunt(s) which is/are organising the meeting.

Confined Hunts Race - for horses which have a current registered Hunters Certificate issued by one of 15 South West hunts.

Mens Open Race – for horses which have a current registered Hunters Certificate. To be ridden by Gentlemen.

Ladies Open Race - for horses which have a current registered Hunters Certificate. To be ridden by Ladies.

Restricted Race - for horses which have a current registered Hunters Certificate, and which have not won any Point to Point race except a Maiden or Members race.

Intermediate Race - for horses which have a current registered Hunters Certificate, which have not won a Flat, Steeplechase or Hurdle race (Point to Points excepted), nor any Mens, Ladies, Mixed Open or Intermediate race.

Open Maiden Race - for horses which have a current registered Hunters Certificate, which have not won any race under Rules.

Novice Riders Race – for horses whose riders have not won more than three races under Rules. 


If a race is subscribed beyond its Safety Factor it can be divided, thus increasing the number of races.
