Dr. Kalmykov was born in Kaliningrad Region of Russia in 1951 and studied in the Department of Biology in the Leningrad State University (now Saint Petersburg State University). In 1973 he joined the Institute of Biological Physics at Pushchino Scientific Center of Russian Academy of Science (now Institute of Cell Biophysics RAS) and is currently a senior scientist.

He earned his doctorate in 1984 under Prof. Arkadiy Yustinianovich Budantzev with a dissertation on the topic of biochemical mechanisms of animal behaviour. Vyacheslav Kalmykov was responsible for neurochemical research on behaviour and for work of interdisciplinary methodological seminars.

His main research interests are as in theoretical as and in practical areas of understanding mechanisms of organization, evolution and behaviour of biosystems. These interests include teaching.
