Googlepages Hosting Tutorial

How to Put the Home Page on the Internet So You Can Use It on Your Voayager

Update: Please note that Google has suspended its hosting service and will no longer permit the creation of new Googlepages hosting accounts. If you already have a Googlepage account, you can continue to use it for hosting (pending Google's transition to a new service sometime in the future). Because users with an existing Googlepages account can continue to use the service for hosting, I will leave this tutorial page active.  If you do not already have a Googlepages account, you will need to find an alternative hosting service for your customized pages.

Note: The suspension of new Googlepages accounts does not affect the "Quick Start" hosted pages. If you would like to use (or continue to use) the default homepages without editting the links, those pages will remain active.

Here's beginners tutorial for hosting the homepage template on your own Googlepages account. I will show you how to use the template as your default Voyager homepage, whether you choose to use the template as is, or to edit it with your own preferences.

Hosting the Home Page Files

1. If you haven't already done so, get the "no folders" version of the template. Googlepages doesn't provide for folders, so be sure to get the "no folders" version. The download links are on the main page, and you must choose the version that corresponds to whether your Voyager has the original (v3) or updated (v5) software.

2. Unzip the files onto your PC somewhere you will be able to find them later. Edit or add links, if you do, or otherwise leave the files unchanged. The template is already setup with dozens of common links, so you are free to use the template "as is" to get started.

3a. If you do not already have a Googlepages account or a Gmail account, then you need to create one. From your computer, go to http://www.googlepages.com and select the option to "Sign Up" for a Google account. It is 100% free.

3b. If you already have a Gmail or Google account, then you already have a Googlepages account (even if you've never used it before). You don't need to signup for anything new.

4. Now we are ready to access your Googlepages account. On your computer, go to http://www.googlepages.com and sign-in (if necessary). If this is the first time you have accessed Googlepages, you may get a screen that looks like the following:

Click the "Back to Site Manager" link as indicated to get to the main Site Manager screen. We do not need to create or edit any pages or templates using the Googlepages interface. Note: if you have previously accessed your Googlepages account, then you will probably be taken right to the Site Manager screen when you login.

5. From the Site Manager screen, select the "upload" link over on the bottom, right side of the page, as indicated below:

6. The upload link will change into a "Browse" button as shown below:

Press the "Browse" button and then navigate to the location where you unzipped the template files in step #2. Select the "index.html" file and then click the "open" link. After a moment, the "index.html" file will appear in the list of "Uploaded stuff" on the right side of the Site Manager page.

7. Repeat steps #5 and #6 to upload all of the other files that you unzipped. Be sure to upload all of the files that your downloaded (other than the release notes), and when you are done, you should see all the uploaded files listed under "Uploaded stuff" as shown in the picture below.

8. Once you've confirmed that all the files have been upload to Googlepages (see the circle on the right), then be sure to write down the web address of your site (see the circle at the top, left of the page).

Note: the actual names and number of the files may vary from the picture depending on which version of the template you are using.

The web address should be something like "http://yourgoogleaccountname.googlepages.com". Congrats ... you've finished setting up your Googlepages account!

9. Now, grab your Voyager and fire up the browser. Chose the "Go to WWW" or "www" option and enter the web address from step #8 and also type in /index.html at the end. Don't forget the "/" (Sym + N on the keyboard) in front of the "index.html". The full address should look like "http://yourgoogleaccountname.googlepages.com/index.html". Hit "OK" and your phone should display the homepage as follows:

Note: the actual screen display may vary from the picture depending on which version of the template you are using.

If the page displays correctly, then we're ready to set it as your new default home page.

Troubleshooting

If you get a " The page you have requested could not be found. (404)" error when trying to load the home page, try the following:

(a) Try accessing the page from your PC browser. If you can load the page from your computer, but not from your Voyager, then one or more of the following try the following:

1. In the Voyager browser, go to Menu | Display Rendering and select "Standard."

2. In the Voyager browser, go to Menu | Advanced or Menu | Manage Memory and select the Clear Cache option.

3. Restart the phone.

Note: the page will probably look very different on your PC computer than on your Voyager (and the screen shots above). This is normal and does not necessarily indicate a problem.

(b) If you cannot access the home page from either your phone or your computer, then try one or more of the following:

1. Make sure you have uploaded all the template files, including the "index.html" file, and that they appear under "Uploaded stuff" (see #8 above).

2. If you changed the name of the "index.html" file to anything else before uploading (check carefully), then use that name when accessing the home page.

3. Click on the "index.html" link under "Uploaded stuff" -- if you still get an error then go to "Site Settings" on the Googlepages site (just above Uploaded Stuff) and uncheck the "Hide this site" option.

Setting Your Voyager Home Page

To set the page as your default home page (so that it comes up every time you start the browser) do the following:

If you have the original (v3) version of the Voyager software, while in the Voyager browser, choose Menu | Settings | Set Homepage and then type in the full address.

If you have the updated (v5 or later) version of the Voyager software, while in the Voyager browser and with the homepage loaded on the screen, choose Menu | Settings | Homepage | Use Current. (Alternatively, choose Menu | Settings | Homepage | Assign New and then type in the full address).
