The EUROPA project is a partnership between Virginia Tech and Hampton University. The purpose of the project is to develop a technology "roadmap" and timeline for a mission to explore Europa, a moon of Jupiter. It is believed that, beneath its icy surface, Europa has large liquid oceans. These oceans are spectulated to be the most likely place for life to exist in the solar system other than Earth. To reach these oceans, a robot must travel through space from several months and then penetrate through the ice, which is estimated to be on the order of ten miles thick. The EUROPA project was funded through NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) Phase 1.
