I am a Siberian-born mathematician, who after an academic career spanning permanent University appointments in the old USSR, New Zealand, and Canada has taken early retirement from the University of Ottawa, ON and went to Brazil. Here I alternate between visiting positions with light, graduate-level teaching and leading the life of a hermit. I have spent a few years on the off-shore island of Santa Catarina, a year in Salvador, Bahia, and over a year in João Pessoa, PB - not counting many months on road trips across Brazil in my small but resilient Fiesta.

My most interesting results to date are related to the dynamical theory of infinite dimensional groups, and many of them appear in this AMS book of mine. Among my other interests are mathematical topics related to datasets. I have written a book about statistical machine learning  for mathematicians, in Portuguese, based on my lectures and published by IMPA. Here is my publication list on google scholar.

Since getting a Ph.D. from Moscow University 40 years ago, I was mostly making my living by teaching - on four different continents, in four different countries, in four different languages.... did I pay my dues, or not quite yet?

ABOUT THE PHOTO

An isolated beach (Praia da Lagoinha do Leste) in the south of the Island of Santa Catarina, only accessible via hiking trails. The island is perhaps my preferred place in the whole world.
