Sylvia's doctoral research focuses on roles of youths in the Karen National Union - a non-state armed group in Burma. She is particularly interested in the non-military roles in non-state groups with political authority - youth leadership training, work in welfare wings and methods of mobilising mass civilian support for the group. Her research involves cross-cutting themes of state-building, borderlands and INGO interventions involving non-state armed groups.
