January 1, 2017:

2016 was a huge year... Our son Fire was born!  I won an episode of Forged in Fire, and appeared on another, and went back to knifemaking full time...
As of 7/2016 I'm taking orders again, click "Contact Me" for the email address!

April 9th, 2013:

I have decided to no longer take custom orders. Still making knives, though!

I just need a break from making the same knives over and over, and I don't like having a long wait list. I feel that to move on to new knives, ideas, and skills, I need to follow my muse where it takes me. I'll be fulfilling current orders, then making whatever interests me.

Great thanks to all my custom orderers, it's been very rewarding working with all of you. I still can't believe I get paid to do this!

Keep on the lookout for different stuff, more damascus and advanced integrals, that I'll post when I catch up with my backlog.

Wow.  It's been a little while.  Heather and I moved again, still in the Tonasket area, renting a house in the hills.  I've got a super great shop here and it's on the grid!  220V grinder and welder, oh boy...

This knifemaking is tough.  But I'm not getting any worse at it and I sure ain't giving up.  You all stick with me and we'll get through all these tough times.

I'm making some folders and working in titanium now.  Watch the gallery for some of these to appear...

If anyone actually reads this, I'm amazed.  Thanks a bunch.

I think we got through the winter here, it's still cold but the sun is shining.  I got my new shop built, and have been turning blades out of it starting about three weeks ago.  Check on the "available for Sale" page, and on Bladeforums. com to see my work for sale!

Barter Faire!

Yep, it's that time of the year again- fall Barter Faire is right around the corner (next weekend) and I will hope to see some of those who read this there.  I've been smithing up a storm on mostly non-knife items; as a matter of fact I have new calluses and blisters on my hands as I type.  I still have a lot to do in order to have a good inventory by thursday when I drive to the Faire site to set up- please wish me luck.  In the all-too-likely event that no one actually does read this before the Faire, I hope you had fun and that I saw you there!  Also, check it out- I have a shop tour up finally and am doing business over the web.  (Hence, the for-sale page.)  Thanks for checking up!

On the Mainland Again!

Heather and I finally made the leap.  We landed at Sea-Tac airport on the 30th, and are now in Tacoma pending the final move to Tonasket and the new shop.  We should be there and building the shop by August 20th or so.  I will post a shop tour as soon as I get everything in line!

Heather and I finally bought one-way tickets back to Washington!  We fly out on the 30th of July and we will see all of you mainlanders soon!  Aloha, Hawaii, it's been swell but the swelling has gone down...

Look for me to ramp up my knife production towards the end of August; you will see a new "for sale" area on the site here and pictures/details/prices of new knives available for sale.

Thanks for checking in, and Aloha!

Company Name Change

posted Feb 6, 2009, 3:10 AM by Salem Straub   [ updated Jul 6, 2009, 6:43 PM ]

How y'all doin' out there? Big news today is that I have changed the name of my company and the mark on my knives to "Promethean Knives."  This is out of respect to the gentlemen Tom Maringer and Bobby Branton, who have used the name "Vorpal Knives" considerably before me.  For an explanation of the new trade mark, see the navigation bar.  Guess the general public is just gonna hafta knuckle down and deal with another two syllables in my name!  (And, I'm gonna hafta knuckle down and start etching my trademark).

The very first one

Hello, all - to anyone who reads this, I'm glad you came, and please look around.  It is a humble beginning I know, but I am learning so much in the process and having a lot of fun doing it!  Satisfies some creative urges for now, since I currently do not have a shop set up at my new location.  I will keep my progress posted and as soon as I get back into a new shop with a digital camera, wait for the pics to start pouring in!
