    5.      A letter outlining the procedure for requesting funds from the parent group was comprised by Carolyn Zimmerman, with the group’s approval.

    6.      Receipts are still outstanding for the drinks and popcorn served on Movie Night and the candy canes handed to students during Santa’s visit.

    The group discussed the following:

    1.      Open House - getting the word out about the hot dog sale, perhaps moving the time up of when the sale would begin that evening.

    2.      Movie Night - March may be a month to consider having a Volney Movie Night. Past attendance on movie nights indicates we could host 2 per school year.

    3.      Ice Cream Social - a June event; will need volunteers. Unopened containers can be returned for credit. “Leftovers” may be left for evening custodial crew.

    4.      Volney Earth Day - May 16th. The Parent Group will be planting with kids, and doing handprint rocks with the primary grades who’ve signed up. The area around our school sign and areas in front of the building that have flowers are the results of last year’s Earth Day activities.

    5.      Websites for Teachers - already being utilized by some here; an excellent communication tool between teachers and families of students.

    6.      At Ms. Garofalo’s request, Jerry Seguin will present on the Capital Project at our May meeting.

    7.      Considering having a parent group member attend our Site-based Committee meeting in May.

    8.      The need for by-laws for the Volney Parent Group was discussed at length. Elections for available positions within the parent group will be held. Individuals interested in holding a position must be a current parent. Increasing attendance for monthly meetings is crucial.

    Minutes submitted by,

  • What we do

The Volney Parent Group assists with program enrichment and the “little things” that make our school special.  We are proud to be a part of Arts in Education.  Our group raises money to help pay for programs that are brought to the school through this important enrichment program.  Through the State and Federal Education Departments, the school district receives grants that pay for 65% of the cost to host the arts.  The extra 35% is paid for by the Volney Parent Group.  In recent years, we have hosted Vitamin L, musician Eric Herman, the Puppet People.  The assemblies are usually performed for the whole school to enjoy.

We also host Movie Night.  Families are invited to participate in this fun time and bring snacks and blankets.  There is often a licensing fee involved with showing the movie to a large audience and the parent group covers that cost.

We provide the Scholastic Book Fairs, assist with Bring a Guest to Lunch day, Earth Day, the Ice Cream Social and teacher appreciation, and the Campfire Sing Along.

Earth Day is a special event for Volney.  The staff, parents and students work together to provide a day of fun activities and presentations.  Often animals such as seeing-eye dogs, goats, donkeys and dogs performing agility tricks descend upon our school.  Presenters teach kids about a variety of topics from sports fitness to flower pressing.

  • What you can do to help

We are always in need of volunteers.  Parents are always welcome to the meetings.

The Book Fair is a four-day event staffed by all volunteers.  We always need help with this event.  Another way you can help is to pay attention to the flyers sent home by your students’ teachers and participate in our fundraisers.  You may do something as simple and important as collect Box Tops for Education labels, which help pay for playground equipment.  You may also make donations to the parent group, either in-kind or monetary.  For example, in the past some parents have donated ice cream or ice cream cones to the Ice Cream Social.  Please contact the school for details.

Read the school calendar for special events and dates, so you can better plan on dates when you might be available to help the school provide extra events that make our school special.

  • Fundraisers
In order to provide programming and extra events and food for children, we hold several fundraisers that help the school save on costs, such as the Book Fair. In working through Scholastic, we are able to provide new books for libraries, classrooms and children. We also hold a Gertrude Hawk candy fundraiser in the fall. A portion of the money earned from families who purchase picture packages with children's school pictures goes to the parent group. We sell t-shirts and apparel that feature the Volney logo.
