Really, SeaWorld Expert Jeff Andrews?

On November 19, 2011, the final day of SeaWorld's challenge to its citations imposed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Jeff Andrews, a 15-year SeaWorld veteran who worked at the San Diego Zoo (and is now back with SeaWorld/Busch Gardens as a VP) testified as SeaWorld's chosen expert. Andrews was presented as an authority in animal behavior and training and in working safely with large animals. Both SeaWorld and OSHA were able to select persons to testify at the hearings in Sanford, Florida, USA. OSHA selected Dr. David Duffus, a killer-whale expert and professor at the University of Victoria in British Columbia.

Details of this hearing were widely reported and are available in David Kirby's book Death at Seaworld. See WFTV's story here: Information Emerges In SeaWorld Trainer's Death.

Secondary to involvement with the case, VOTO has a copy of Jeff Andrews' expert report for SeaWorld. After reading it, the only thing that comes to mind is...

Here are just a few juicy whoopers we pulled out of this startling and outrageous piece of work.

1.  "Tilikum was never aggressive towards her."  Really!?!  Have you read the medical examiner's report  by Dr. Joshua Stephany MD?

2.   "He [Tilikum] grasped the hair in what was likely a curious manner."  Really!?!  Elizabeth Batt at  Digital Journal describes it differently.  For a video   description watch the following:

3.     He "simply controlled her movements by not letting her reach the surface."   Really!?!  SeaWorld called 911 and reported that a trainer had been "eaten." Admittedly, Tilikum did not ingest his trainer, but it seems like it was a little more than "controlled... movements."

4.    "The only thing that led to this event was a mistake made by Ms. Brancheau in allowing her long hair to float out into an area that Tilikum could grab it..."  Really!?!  So, it was Dawn's fault?

The Orca Project has already debunked the "Ponytail Theory."  What's interesting is how SeaWorld's top brass repeatedly blamed the event on Dawn. Now it's clear that, behind the scenes, Jeff Andrews was blaming her as well. Consider reviewing the TOP story to see how current corporate curator Chuck Tompkins, and his predecessor, Thad Lacinak, both blamed Dawn. There are videotaped interviews at The Orca Project.

New today is this startling and outrageous report by Jeff Andrews. For the full report click here:  SeaWorld's Expert Witness Report blames Dawn.
