General DreamScene Questions

How do I set my desktop background to a DreamScene video?

Preliminary steps:
  • First, you must have Windows Vista Ultimate. This is a system requirement and DreamScene will not legally work on any other version of Vista or Windows.
  • Second, you need to have DreamScene installed. If you don't have DreamScene installed, click on your start button. Type 'ultimate extras' in the search box and click on Windows Ultimate Extras. Next, click on 'View available extras'. Scroll down to the bottom. Under the heading 'Windows Ultimate Extras', DreamScene should be listed. Check the box beside it and click install. Follow the setup.

Right-click on your desktop. Click 'Personalize'. Next, click on 'Desktop Background'. From the drop-down menu click 'Windows DreamScene Content' or click the Browse button and locate the video file you want to use as your background.

Note: If you don't have a widescreen monitor you may also want to select the 'Crop to fit screen' option at the bottom of the Desktop Background window. This will ensure the wide screen picture is not distorted from its original aspect ratio.

How do I get rid of the black bars on the top and bottom of my monitor?

All of the content on this site is in wide screen format. If you don't have a wide screen display, just select the 'Crop to fit screen' option when choosing your desktop background.

Once this option is selected the video will zoom in but still use its original aspect ratio. Consequently, the video clip will fill your whole screen and you won't see the black bars on the top and bottom.

Basic BitTorrent Questions:

What is BitTorrent?

BitTorrent is a way to transfer files. It is similar to a peer-to-peer network (but it IS legal).

What is a BitTorrent Client?

You need to have a Client (I recommend uTorrent) installed on your computer to download files on the BitTorrent network. Kinda like you need a web browser to surf the 'net.

What is a .torrent file?

First, a .torrent file does not contain the files you are trying to download. A .torrent file merely provides a 'link' to a list of people who have the files you want to download.

What do I do once I've downloaded the .torrent file?

You open the .torrent file in your BitTorrent Client. Your client will grab the list of people who have the files you want to download, and start to download the files from those people.

Is BitTorrent safe?

Hmm. That question is similar to asking 'Is the Internet safe?' I guess the answer is: it depends. The Internet is somewhat safe. I.e. You can get viruses from sketchy websites but most sites do not have viruses. In the same way, you can get viruses from downloads but most BitTorrent downloads don't have viruses. Before downloading anything, I would make sure you trust the publisher of the torrent.

What if I still can't get my BitTorrent Client to download the DreamScene Videos? A.k.a. I need more help!

  • If the files aren't downloading right away, don't worry. It might take a long time depending on the number of people sharing the file and the speed of their (and your) internet connections. If nobody's online and sharing the files (a.k.a. if there are no seeders), you'll have to wait until someone comes online.
  • Try re-downloading the .torrent file and opening it again in your BitTorrent client.
  • You should check that your Client is configured correctly.
The first time I tried using BitTorrent, I could not, for the life of me, get things to work. I could see that there were seeders but I could not connect to them. I must have tried three different Clients before my friend told me that it was probably the fault of my internet provider (traffic shaping). My internet service provider (Rogers), the cheap company that they are, decided to limit my internet connection and attempt to block BitTorrent connections. However, I got around the traffic shaping by turning on Encryption in my client's options.
  • If you have other problems, refer to the help menu in your Client or go the Client's website. (You may need to read more about BitTorrent to understand what the help pages say. The explanation I gave above is very very basic.)
  • You can also try downloading the videos normally through your browser (aka HTTP Downloads) as CalviNet has generously provided me with an incredible hosting service.

Note: Windows DreamScene is a free update but only available to Windows Vista Ultimate users.
