Educator Service Learning Trip

In August 2015, LHI will host an exciting service-learning trip focused on education in the indigenous community of Chajul, Guatemala (university credit available). This is a unique opportunity to observe classrooms, engage in dialogue with teachers and school directors, and learn first-hand about educational experiences from Chajul's students themselves -- all in a beautiful remote part of Guatemala. Past service projects have included planting organic house gardens, supporting Chajul's public library, mixing and laying cement for school classroom floors, and professional development workshops with local teachers. You will also get to play games with youth, take beautiful hikes, learn to make tortillas, hear from an ex-guerrilla from the Guatemalan civil war, take a boat tour of Lake Atitlan, visit a sacred Mayan site, shop at the world famous market of Chichicastenango, and much more.

Trip highlights

  • Share in the lives of local families by learning to make two of the Ixil region’s most traditional foods and trying your hand at ancient weaving techniques.
  • Take an emotional and educational journey into the past, lead by survivors of Guatemala’s 36-year civil war.
  • Learn an indigenous language with an Ixil language lesson from a local teacher.
  • Gain an understanding of local barriers to educational access by observing local classrooms and participating in a Q&A with teachers and school directors.
  • Collaborate with the community on a service project. Past projects have included painting the community library, laying a cement floor in a school classroom, and planting an organic school garden.
  • Hike through the beautiful hills of the Guatemala Highlands, take a boat tour of Lake Atitlan, visit a sacred Mayan site, and shop at the world famous artisan market of Chichicastenango.
Join us this summer for a learning experience of a lifetime!
