PERIYAR TIGER RESERVE

The Periyar Tiger Reserve is a well monitored national park.Close to Kumily is Thekaddy , also known as Periyar National Park,considered the most beautiful wildlife sanctuary in India.Set high in the mountains of the Western Ghats,bordering Tamil Nadu,the protected area is spread over the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta.
The national park has an area of 777 sq.km.It is bounded by the mountain ridges of over 1700 m altitude toward the west it expands into a 1200 m high plateau.The valley of the river Pamba,Kottamalai at 2019 m is the highest peak in the park.
Take a bus to Kumily bordering the Park.Buses are available from Madurai.

Your next destination would be Chitkul.Tucked away in a remote corner of the upper Kinnaur Valley and surrounded by the Himalayas,it is the last civilian village on the Indo-Tibetan border.Located at a height of 12,500 ft,Chitkul is an hour-and-a-half's drive from Sangla.Further below,by the river bank,a hotspring could be spotted.The last Indo-Tibetan post is a 4km trek.An ancient temple of goddess Usha Devi and an old Buddhist chouktan are the centres of religious and social interaction of the village.
A PEEK AT KINNAUR KAILASH
An hour-and-half's drive from Sangla is Peo,the district headquarters of Kinnaur,located at an altitude of 2,670 m.The town offered a panoramic view of the Kinnaur Kailash,a 79 ft rock formation resembling the Shivalinga.Also visible is the Raldang range.The Buddhist monastery in Peo is worth a visit.
About 14 km from Peo is Kalpa.Earlier Kalpa was called Chini.But,as the region was very close to China,the Indian government thought it was wise to change the name.
How to go :Nearest airport is Shimla.Deccan and Jagson airways operate regular flights from Delhi.There's also the daily Howrah-Delhi-Kalka Mail.Kalka is 96 kms away from Shimla.Other than the luxury train Shivalik Palace,passenger,ordinary as well as mail trains run between the two towns everyday.Shimla is also connected with Kalka by excellent roadways.
When to go :Anytime between April and November.It's best to avoid the months of rain as the Sutlej is then in full spate.
