1850s Melodeon, manufactured by Prince and Company, Patented May 22, 1856, "Improved Melodeon, #26,729".
A Melodeon is a small reed organ in the shape of a miniature square piano. These instruments were the forerunners of the Victorian parlor organ. Most melodeons date from the early to mid 19th century, and are extremely rare. Their tone is light and sweet and their cabinets are quite beautiful. Most surviving specimens of these instruments are found in museums.
Here are photographs of another wonderful 1850's Melodeon that we have for sale.
