Church Activities

Foot and Blood Pressure Clinic
The parish offers a Foot and Blood Pressure Clinic staffed by a
Nurse Supervisor and several assistants with nursing training.
Area residents are invited to come for blood pressure monitoring, foot massage, and nail trimming.  Vining Lutheran hosts this clinic in its Fellowship Hall the first Tuesday of each month, 9am to 11am, supported in part by freewill donations.
Church Quilters
A dedicated group of ladies meet to make quilts for overseas distribution through Lutheran World Relief and also for local distribution to families in need as well as gifts to graduating seniors.  They meet on Wednesday mornings from January to April, then enjoy a nice noon meal together.  Nancy Hoffman and Jan Perreten coordinate the work of the Parish Quilters.
 Prayer Shawl Ministry
There is a group of women in our parish that meets each month
to coordinate the crafting and distribution of pray
er shawls
to people in the community who are sick or carrying heavy burdens.  It is a way to show sufferers they
are enfolded in the love of God and the kindness of
friends.  If you can knit or crochet (or would like to learn) you might enjoy participating in
this ministry.  The coordinator for the Prayer Shawl Ministry is Phyllis Gaustad.
Men's  Bible Study

On the second Saturday of each month, men from the parish and area community are invited to the Vining Lutheran for a breakfast at 8am served by a volunteer, followed by a bible study, usually a look at the lessons that will be heard the

next day at worship.

Women of the ELCA

Each congregation has its own women's group (WELCA).  They meet monthly for Bible study and other special programs.  The women's groups also serve their congregations in many ways throughout the year.  Presidents this year are: Leaf Mountain - Violet Moen ; Nidaros - Shelly Scheer ; Vining - LeeAnn Turchin.

Watermelon Day

The month of August brings the community celebration, Watermelon Day, which attracts thousands of visitors to Vining..  This year, Watermelon Day will be
celebrated on August 17.  It includes lots of activities, food and fun.  The congregations of our parish all contribute to this event.   The Vining Church hosts breakfast on Saturday morning, as well as serving coffee, lemonade and bars during the afternoon; the Parish Youth operate a food stand and Leaf Mountain runs a bake sale throughout the day; the women of Nidaros serve pie and ice cream after the parade on Saturday evening.  On Sunday morning  we gather together outside for a parish and community worship service.  The Leaf Mountain folk serve a noon meal at the Vining Community Center on Sunday.

Youth Ministry
Sunday School & Vacation Bible School
Sunday School begins at the preschool level, with each congregation in the parish having its own Sunday School program from September to May.  In the summer, a Vacation Bible School day camp event (4 days) is offered for all the children (K-6) in the parish and area community.
Faith Milestones

Faith milestones are part of the faith journey as children are nurtured in the Christian faith and life by the church community:

  • Bible Presentation: In the 3rd grade the Sunday School presents each child with a Bible, helping the parents fulfill a promise they made when their child was brought for baptism - "that you place in their hands the Holy Scriptures."
  • First Communion: In the 5th grade the children are given pre-communion instruction.  Having learned why Holy Communion is important and how Jesus becomes real for us under the special eating and drinking we call Holy Communion, the children are then welcomed to God's family banqueting table as communing members.  Their participation in the Lord's Supper becomes an important means of grace as they experience and grow in the love of Christ.
  • Confirmation
    : Special
classes are held for young people in grades 7-9 (Oct
ober through April).  The purpose of these confirmation classes is to review the basics of the
Christian faith and the story of the scriptures.
  • Confirmation: In the fall of the 10th gr
ade the students make a profession of their faith, aff
irming the faith into which they were baptized.
  • Graduation:
When our young people graduate from high school they are honored at a Baccalaureate service and presented a personalized quilt crafted by the Parish Quilters.
Area Youth Group

There are various events for those in grades 7-12 planned throughout the year by the OTC-LYO (Otter Tail County – Lutheran Youth Organization).  This is a ministry carried out cooperatively by the ELCA parishes across the center of Otter Tail County – from Underwood to Henning.

Special Events

There are a number of special congregational events that take place within the parish each year.  Members of the entire parish, as well as the surrounding community, are invited to these special events.
