Pearson Foundation-International Reading Association-Rotary Literacy Project Award Recipient
Vineyard Valleys Reading Council received one of two Pearson Foundation-International Reading Association-Rotary Literacy Project Awards for 2012. In addition to the $2500 award, Pearson Foundation donated 1,000 print books to the literacy project through We Give Books (www.wegivebooks.org).
Donna Kalmbach Phillips, Vineyard Valleys Reading Council member and project coordinator, shared:
I just returned July 7 from Guatemala where I spent the week working with the indigenous teachers and first language Ixil speakers in the village of Santa Avelina. I took with me seven sets of books, written and illustrated or translated by the teachers. The pride and joy they displayed as they examined their published work was evident in their smiles and in the way they handled the books. Even better was the experience of having children discover the books! The smiles, laughter and exclamations: the very personal power of literacy and identity packaged together in small hands as they explored a book in their own language. This grant will allow this multi-layered work of literacy to continue and evolve. I am thrilled on behalf of us all to accept the grant and put it to the good work of growing the cultural and literate identities of the Ixil Mayan population in Guatemala.
