Water System

The Village of Van Etten Municipal Water system serves businesses and homes of village residents and a few outside properties that adjoin the village. There are subpages dedicated to additional notes and the Annual Water Report. The PDF files attached to this page include a selection of bulletins, regulations, and forms pertaining to water system services.

On May 19, 2015, the New York Rural Water Association (NYRWA) awarded the 2015 Water System of the Year to the Village of Van Etten for their continued excellence in providing safe drinking water through superior operations and progressive management.

Additional Notes:
  • You may arrange electronic payment with your bank or credit union, mail a check, or bring payments to the Village Center office, 6 Gee St. (NY-34, opposite the Dandy Mart), during office hours. For your convenience, there is now a secure drop box for payments next to the office entrance at the Village Center. Please avoid using paper clips or staples. Use an envelope to keep items together. If you prefer to use a credit card to pay your water bill click here on Quick PayPlease note that, if your account number on your billing begins with a zero, start with the first whole number. There is a small fee for this service.
  • The village hydrant system is working very well, providing pressure and volume needed to the highest standard. It is in the interest of property owners with a hydrant to keep it cleared, visible, and accessible.
  • During severely cold weather, it is critical to keep your pipes from freezing and bursting. Unless all plumbing is in a space that can be monitored and kept above freezing, pipes must be drained thoroughly and service shut off. If that can not be done at the user valve, located before the meter, a curb service shut-off may be requested. Contact the Village Clerk at (607) 589-4484, at least two weeks before needed. There may be a charge for curb shut-off and turn-on. Property owner or representative must be present for curb valve opening and closing. Professional assistance may be necessary to assure that no water is left in any part of an unheated plumbing system.
  • Water service that enters through an unheated space must be protected with a thermostatic heat tape and insulation. Heat tapes must be checked for proper operation each season. Freezing damage to the entrance pipe and/or meter is the property owner's responsibility, even if the pipe and meter were initially installed with the water system. The village has a small supply of meters and meter back plates available for replacement at our cost. If needed, check with the Village Clerk at (607) 589-4484. No guarantee of immediate availability is implied.
  • Property owners are responsible for the installation and operation of all plumbing beyond the curb valve, including any other system controls, such as pressure regulators, zone valves, booster pumps, and connections to the meter system. Property owners will be billed for any costs related to labor and/or material necessary to replace metering components, which must be done by the village or its designee. This does not include failures of the meter system in normal use, such as the transponder battery, the internal mechanism, or the impeller. However, these failures may required access to the meter and/or service shut-off.
  • Water system regulations, local law #1 of 2006 may be found at Village Laws or at the Village Office.
  • For swimming pool filling, please call the Village Clerk at (607) 589-4484. There is a one-time fee to the village and a good-will donation to the Van Etten Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., for the delivery, is expected.
