The Radhakalyanam is a three day function held every year in the tamil month of Margazhi. The unique aspect of the Radha Kalyanam is that the wedding (kalyanam) of the lord is conducted on a Saturday only. Devotees in large number gather in Vilangudi from various towns and cities to attend this function.
For conducting the Radhakalyanam each year, one or more families undertake the expenses of the “samarthanai” and “abhishegam”. This is usually a prarthanai (vow) taken by these families to conduct the same seeking the blessings of the Lord. The samarthanai is usually booked well in advance (most of the times during the conduct of the Radha Kalyanam itself) for the next year.
Another unique aspect of the Radha Kalyanam at Vilangudi is that the “kalyana utsavam” is celebrated just like a traditional marriage with events like “maalai matral” (exchange of garlands), “podi suthuthal” (for warding off the evil eye). Also the vigrahas of Radha and Krishna are decorated separately on different pedestals (in most kalyana utsavams the deities are kept together). The idols of the lord and consort are taken out in a procession into the kalyana pandal laid in front of the main entrance of the temple and the maalai maatral is performed in the pandal with ladies singing along and nadaswaram as in traditional household marriages.
This year (2011) a grand namasankeerthana mela is proposed to be conducted.
Devotees make themselves present during the occasion with one pair of Paruppu Thengai, along with other "seer varisai" and place this before the Radha Krishna idols with Kalyana alankaram on the morning of the Radhakalyanam day. The paruppu thengai and seer varisai are taken out by the devotees and family and brought to the Maha Mandapam after making a pradakshinam of the temple. This is done just before the "Thirumangalya Dharanam".
As can be seen the growing belief in this practice is resulting in the Maha Mandapam being filled up with the paruppu thengai and seer.
Devotees who are not able to attend in person on that day would arrange to offer the Paruppu Thengai through anyone else known to them.
Now, the Organisers have made arrangements to prepare the Paruppu Thengai at the temple premises itself and send the prasadam to the devotees by post, for which the charges including postage is Rs 200/-. Devotees wishing to utilize this service are requested to send the name of the boy or girl with their star and gothram for doing the archana with the amount informing full postal address for sending the prasadam.
