View Ridge WRC Program

The Washington Reading Corps literacy tutoring program has been at View Ridge for four years now. The members at View Ridge work closely with struggling readers to increase their fluency skills. They use research based methods and materials to support their students. WRC members are also focused on creating family involvement events and extra curricular student activities  centered around reading.

Volunteering

"If you want to lift yourself up lift someone else up."  - Booker T. Washington

Our goal is to have one-on-one tutoring sessions with every student. We are working to attain this goal through strengthening and increasing our volunteer pool. Currently, we have a group of wonderful volunteers who come one or two times a week for as much time as they can afford. This small amount of time helps our students immensely.

Donate Your Time to Making a Difference

We would love to have you volunteer with our program and help us further foster and cultivate these children's love for reading.  Their comprehension and fluency skills are the stepping stone to success in school and in life.

For further information, please call (360)473-4508 and ask for April or you can e-mail us as vrwashingtonreadingcorps@gmail.com.

Outside the Classroom

 Family Nights

The AmeriCorps members are dedicated to involving View Ridge families as well as the community in their children's education. We have created a night once a month where families can come and enjoy a snack and play different literacy games with their students. Parents are also offered the opportunity to make their own literacy game to take home. We try to get volunteers from our community to come in and share their passion with our students and families.

Civic Engagement Club: CSI

This year the WRC teams from View Ridge as well as Naval Avenue are hosting a civic engagement program for group of 5th graders called Roadmap to Civic Engagement. Roadmap is a curriculum-based program designed to encourage citizenship, civic duty, and lifelong community service. This team has named themselves CSI (Community Service Involvement). This team of young people are lending a hand to their community in many ways. Members of CSI vounteered their time at our March Family Reading night. This team is already off to a great start!

Early Morning Otters

Our Early Otter Reading Club is a space for students to come from 8:15-8:45 to get help with homework or participate in literacy games led by Washington Reading Corps members. Unfortunately, transportation is NOT provided. All students participating must have a parent permission slip.
