Why Choose A Doula?

There are plenty of great reasons to hire a doula!

1. Continuity of care

I get to know you and your partner before you are in labour. I remain with you throughout your labour and delivery, and I visit you after the birth. I become familiar with your personal situation and preferences.

2. Accountability

I work for you, not your hospital, care provider, or other third party. I am there to serve your interests alone.

3. Knowledgeable resource

You don't have to memorize your prenatal classes. I can suggest comfort measures, positions, movements and other measures to facilitate your labour progression, and provide guidance on when to go to the hospital, or when to call your care provider.

4. Partner support

I've got your back! I help your partner support you according to his/her comfort level. During long labours, I make sure your partner gets some rest and nourishment.

5. Experience and perspective

I know you can do it. When labour gets intense, I reassure you that your sensations are normal. A calm presence can be the difference, for both mother and partner, between coping and panicking.

6. Lower rates of intervention

Studies show that having a doula present reduces the rates of induction, augmentation, caesarean birth, instrumental deliveries, epidurals, narcotic pain relief and maternal emotional distress. In fact, a recent meta-analysis published in February, 2011 in The Cochrane Library looked at 21 randomized controlled studies involving more than 15,000 women. The study found that, compared with women who had no continuous support, women who had a doula were:

• 28% less likely to have a cesarean section
• 31% less likely to use synthetic oxytocin (i.e. Pitocin) to speed labor
• 9% less likely to use any pain medication
• 34% less like to rate their childbirth experience negatively.
