Birth of the United States Navy

On June 12, 1775 , after an hour-long battle the Sloop Unity captured the British armed schooner Margaretta at the entrance to the harbor at Machias after she threatened to bombard the town for interference with the shipment of lumber to British troops in Boston, Massachusetts. Jeremiah O’Brien, of Machias and his five brothers, Gideon, John, William, Dennis and Joseph, were crew-members of the sloop Unity along with thirty-one townsmen armed with guns, swords, axes, and pitch forks.

As a result of this action and further threats to Machias from the British Navy, the Continental Congress authorized the creation of what would become the United States Navy on 13 October 1775.

Happy Birthday Navy!
