Back to the Let's Play The Legend of Zelda (NES) Index
There are three items that this bonus page will show you. The first is the magic unlocking door in Level 1 (discussed in more detail in my First Quest walkthrough). The second is what happens if you use a Your Money Or Your Life room and give up a heart while you've only got 3. And lastly is a neat color glitch at the ending when you save Princess Zelda.
The Vanishing Level 1 Locked Door:
This works in the first quest only. You simply come across the bridge and enter Level 1. Note the locked door to the North.
Now all you do is leave the level and immediately enter it again, and the door to the North has mysteriously unlocked itself.
Handy way to save a key.
Ending Credits Color Glitch:
This can be done in either quest, it just takes a bit of luck to get it right. Just walk into the flames in front of Princess Zelda, and when you take damage, use your brief invincibility to walk through them. The color you are as soon as you walk into Princess Zelda is the color you will be for the ending credits!
Giving Up A Heart When You've Only Got 3:
This can only be done in the second quest. First off, we need to collect a few items to try this out. For the sake of dying less, I grabbed the blue ring first, and then went and grabbed the Whistle from Level 2.
After grabbing medicine from the overworld in the graveyard, I venture into Level 6 to get The Ladder.
Why? Because I'm an idiot. It skipped my mind that you can find the old man who wants your money or life in Level 4 instead of waiting for the two in Level 7. So all you really need is the Power Bracelet and some luck.
Just to be even further on the safe side, I am grabbing the large hylian shield.
Interesting. So I happened to only have 1/2 of a heart red when I got here. So when I gave over my heart, it subtracted 1 red heart worth of health but did not remove any actual hearts. So I am actually walking around with zero hearts right now.
Of course, I immediately died in the next room... But still, it was a slightly unexpected result. Because if it would let you actually subtract a heart, we could've gone to Level 7 and gotten rid of the other 2 to see what happened. But still a neat way that the game handles this condition.
