FRANCIONE IS ONLINE!

Clearly this site is lacklustre, but, never fear, Francione is here! On the world wide web that is.

To check out Gary’s blog, updated weekly, go here: http://garyfrancione.blogspot.com/

For Gary’s brand spanking new website, go here: http://www.animal-law.org/

These two sites are much, much better than this one. So, if you are new to animal rights and don’t know where to start, start there, not here.

FRANCIONE ON VEGAN FREAK RADIO

The brand new 3 hour Francione interview on Vegan Freak Radio is up in two parts. This is some of the most recent work Francione has done, so it deserves a listen.

FRANCIONE LECTURE VIDEO

In April, Francione presented a paper at the Duke University Animal Law Conference. It is, for the most part, a summary of everything that Francione has written in the last twenty five years (insofar as that is possible). That said, it is a thorough discussion of the topic, and, I think, is worth watching. You can download it here (you will need Realplayer):

WE'RE NOT ALONE!

I was fishing around on forums and came across one on Francione which is quite good.  There is a large summary of the defects of new welfarism and then a sort of dialogue between two well-informed and intelligent abolitionists.  I suggest everyone read it to get ready for our discussion of this topic in the upcoming weeks.

REVIEW OF JOAN DUNAYER'S "SPECIESISM"

Recently, Joan Dunayer published a book entitled "Scpeciesism", where she argued for a pro animal rights position.  However, after Gary Francione refused to write the introduction to the book that she desired, she removed all the nice things she said about him and decided to attack his theory.  Jeff Perz has written a long critique of Dunayer's work, and clarifies misconceptions she has concerning Francione.  Some of the clarifications are helpful in regards to answering common issues with Francione's work.  You can find the review here:

PEACEFUL PRAIRIE BLOG

I have been pouring over these blogs as of late, and I thought I would share them with you.  Joanna Lucas has an extraordinary talent for capturing the emotional diversity of nonhuman animals, though she is quite modest about it.  If you know people who are omnis, I would recommend you forward them this link - they are sure to be touched.

NEW FRANCIONE BLOG: GARY UPS THE SASS!

Gary Francione has just published a new blog entry commenting on the disastrous state of the animal welfare movement, and the tragedy that is Whole Foods.  Find it here:

NEW FRANCIONE BLOG: GRASSROOTS AND CENTRALIZED ACTIVISM

Francione published a new blog entry about the problems with large, centralized activist organizations.  The conversation is a summary of some conversations that occurred on the Vegan Freaks forum after his latest interview.  Find it here:

Some Thoughts On National Organizations

OLDER FRANCIONE ARTICLE

I just found this older Francione paper that was published in Between the Species in 1998 (and was originally published earlier than that), and discusses, in a more philosophically dense fashion, the problems with utilitarianism.  I think the paper is interesting because it explains why the current new welfarist paradigm is so predominant.  Find it here:

VEGAN FREAK FORUM WITH FRANCIONE

I just found out that Francione has been publishing a litany of replies to all sorts of questions about his latest, three hour interview which he did on Vegan Freak radio.  The forum post is about 16 pages long or something, and not all of it is worthwhile, but the forum has a search function, so you can try and find questions which may interests you; or you can just browse through the questions (not all of which are awesome, but that is to be expected).  Find the forum thread here:

NEW FRANCIONE BLOG: JANE GOODALL AND ERIK MARCUS

Francione has two new blogs up.  One is simply a piece of an interview with Jane Goodall, which solidifies her stance as a speciesist.  The other is a 2 1/2 hour recorded discussion between Francione and Erik Marcus.  Markus takes a welfarist stance and, of course, Francione seeks to prove him wrong.  You can find them here:

FRANCIONE PAPER ON PROPERTY STATUS

I have found five Francione articles that I had previously not known about, so I will be posting them intermittently so that the site is guaranteed to have something new once and a while.  This paper is about animals as property and was published in 1996.  It is just a good review of what we have already discussed at meetings.

FRANCIONE PAPERS AVAILABLE THROUGH QUEEN'S

I have been searching through the journals available to Queen's students, and I found a couple of Francione's papers which I have previously not seen.  Unfortunately, to view them requires that you either be on the campus connection, or that you have set up the Queen's webproxy.  I apologize to those who are not Queen's students.  However, if you are very interested, send an email and there way be something we can do. The links are below:

CANADIAN ANIMAL WELFARE LAWS

I thought that people may have an interest in checking out a recent debate of which out of two (very shitty) animal welfare laws the Canadian government should adopt to amend the ones that are still in place from the 18th century.  Notice that neither of the bills focuses substantially on the property status of the animals, and that bill  S-213 looks like it will pass over bill C-373 simply because it does more or less nothing and that previous, supposedly "more ambitious" bills, have failed to pass.  The first website is an article about the two bills, the second website, along with a comparison of each bill, has a decent history of animal welfare laws and shows how little animal welfare laws have changed in 200 years, despite the supposed recognition of the sentience of animals.
