Welcome to the van Heel lab Homepage

Coeliac disease is common.

It is partly inherited.

We are investigating how, why and more...

Our research group is working to find out why coeliac disease runs in families so we can understand the condition better. Use the links on the left to discover more about how and what we are doing.

In Autumn 2009, we started directly writing to Coeliac UK members with an invitation to donate a research sample (saliva/spit). For more information on this project, please see the
participate in research page. We have had nearly 5,500 samples returned so far (11 May 2010) and would like to say a big thank you to everyone that has helped us!

The van Heel lab is based at the Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Sciences, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, London, UK and is lead by Professor David van Heel. The group researches the genetics and immunology behind coeliac disease and collaborates closely with other groups researching coeliac disease around the world.

Our research is generously funded by:

Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
