Truth Will Set Us Free
July 18, 2008

One of the more fascinating events unraveling these days is to witness the collapse of a controlled, monolithic censorship.  It is coming about in a curious way.  If we were to plot a graph of the trend toward acceptance of Anthropogenic Global Warming theory, it would look like a sharply rising curve.  Since its introduction some twenty years ago, AGW theory has been gaining political and (apparent) scientific embrace.  We are beginning to see however, in the last few months, the collapse of that curve.  The mainstream press has for the past five or so years, worked in concert with a handful of arbiters of global warming opinion.  Most of that opinion has been formulated by press releases from the IPCC (a UN-based inter-governmental panel) and published by slavishly obedient media.

But what is occurring today is truly revolutionary.  The science community, our world’s foremost thinkers on technical issues, is casting increasing, vociferous doubt about the veracity of AGW.  There are now more than 500 scientists self-identified as skeptics of global warming theory.  The Editor of the prestigious American Physical Society, established in 1898 representing more than 50,000 physicists wrote this week under Editor’s Comments:

"There is a considerable presence within the scientific community of people who do not agree with the IPCC conclusion that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are very probably likely to be primarily responsible for the global warming that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution. Since the correctness or fallacy of that conclusion has immense implications for public policy and for the future of the biosphere, we thought it appropriate to present a debate within the pages of P&S concerning that conclusion."

This re-opening of the scientific debate on global warming represents an enormous crack in the armor of censorship.  Because up until now we have rarely heard from the legitimate skeptics of global warming.  If you were a working scientist, you were committing professional suicide to question the IPCC party line.  By some improbable circumstance IPCC pronouncements garnered all the momentum, all the publicity and all the media buzz.  And IPCC theory controlled the grant money being handed out.  If you wanted a research grant you needed to get comfortable with global warming.  And you needed to support the AGW theory.  Those who dared publish a separate opinion, to criticize the theory, to offer counter yet scientific evidence - were shunned, ridiculed and swept from the visible arena.  Good, knowledgeable scientists were shut out of the business of science solely due to their skeptical opinion of global warming theory.  This has made for neither good science or a free press.   This has been censorship and suppression at its most cynical, destructive worst.
In the interest of balance, AGW has for the most part been a reasoned (if unproven) foundation to confront our insatiable consumption of fossil fuels.  This must be done regardless of motivation because we cannot continue on the path we are on.   But policy and social conduct must be informed by fact; and facts are what have been missing in global warming debate.  Global Energy Independence is Earth's great new challenge and we must meet it globally with united clarity of conscience.
What follows this new enlightenment will be an amazing social transition.  We will begin to see heretofore little people, the skeptical “unwashed” of science, journalism and thought - become visible.  They will be seen and heard raising their voices in growing harmony.  They will sing the hymn of free thought, individual liberty and inalienable rights.  And they will be heard.  The monolith of censorship will crack ever more; because in the end we pray, with the assistance of our universal spirit and great Creator, the Truth will begin to be known.  And the Truth... will set us free.
