I am a Research staff member at the Human Language Technologies group at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. Prior to joining IBM I was a postdoctoral fellow with Emmanuel Candès at the Mathematics Department at Stanford University, and later with David Donoho at the Statistics Department, also at Stanford university. I completed my PhD in the Department of Computer Science at the the University of British Columbia, working in the scientific computing lab under the guidance of Michael Friedlander. I obtained my MSc degree at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at Delft university of Technology. Before starting my PhD programme I worked at the supercomputing center of the computer network information center, Chinese academy of sciences, and at a private company called S&T.

A copy of my PhD thesis can be found here. Following the practice of reproducible research, all code used for the experiments, as well as the code for generating the tables and figures appearing in the thesis is available and can be downloaded here.

Research interests

Numerical optimization, convex analysis, high-dimensional geometry, machine learning, acoustic modeling, compressed sensing and its applications, and high-performance computing.
