Welcome to my portfolio! The portfolio is a final compilation of my work in the Master's of Science in Education in Information Technology Program at Western Oregon University. It demonstrates my competence of the program requirements and the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers. This portfolio also showcases my passion for technology use in education.
In 2007 I completed my undergraduate work from Western Oregon University. My degree was in Education with a focus in elementary and middle school levels. At that time I also received endorsements in middle school math and English for Speakers of Other Languages. Once graduated, I accepted a job in the Woodburn School District, returning to my hometown. After working for two years I decided to return to WOU to pursue my Master's while continuing my position as a teacher.
This is my sixth year teaching my experience has been in the upper elementary grades, including both 4th and 5th grade. I am a strong advocate for bilingual education and am part of the Spanish bilingual program. I also have the opportunity to teach English Now classes at our local community college. These are adult computer classes in Spanish for beginners that include key vocabulary building in English relating to technology.
My vision of education is that learning experiences should be characterized as engaging, meaningful and attainable. Technology integration is a necessity to make these characteristics possible. Students should be encouraged to take charge of their own learning. Teachers serve as facilitators, adapting depending on the specific needs of the students. This provides a democratic environment in the classroom, which involves both the learners and the teacher collaborating. The classroom environment should not only promote learning, but also encourage acceptance and respect to all students. I also believe that students should be taught values that promote their social and emotional wellbeing. All students should be given an equal opportunity to learn and demonstrate their creativity and strengths. Teachers must consider the background, strengths, and weaknesses in order to properly adapt learning experiences.
