I am a Professor of Mathematics at Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa with expertise in mathematics education. I have a B.A. in mathematics education from Dordt University with an endorsement in K-12 athletic coaching. I also have a middle school endorsement from the University of Sioux Falls. In 2005 I completed an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction through Dordt University followed by an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Dakota in 2015. My dissertation title was Mindsets, Attitudes, and Achievement in Undergraduate Statistics Courses.
Classes that I have taught include Core 100, Linear Algebra, Mathematics for College, Number and Operation for the Elementary Teacher, Geometry for the Elementary Teacher, Statistics for the Elementary Teacher, Methods of Teaching Elementary Mathematics, Methods of Teaching Secondary Mathematics, Number Theory, Elementary Statistics, Problem Solving Seminar, and Experimental Design.
Areas of interest include STEM outreach activities for middle and high-school students, integrating faith and learning, rich-problem-solving tasks, maintaining cognitive demand, and coteaching. I am passionate about high-quality mathematics instruction and love exploring this with pre-service and in-service teachers. I am also the Principal Investigator on a $1.2 million National Science Foundation grant which provides scholarships for STEM education students.
