Pastoral Job Description

JOB TITLE:  Pastor

HOURS: Full-time




We seek a man who shares God’s vision for a growing church and will effectively lead the congregation into His vision for our church.  

Valley View is a church ready to embrace the next chapter and seeks a man with a pioneering spirit and the ability to lead change in a 

turn-around situation.  We seek a man gifted in delivering Biblically-based messages of significance and excellence to the congregation 

each week.  He will act as leader, shepherd and chief overseer of the church, under the supervision of the deacons.




· A deep personal relationship with Jesus Christ evidenced in daily life and exhibiting character qualities outlined in

  I Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9 and I Peter 5:1-4.

· Exhibit personal qualities that are of the highest integrity and unquestionable honesty.

· Excellent communicator; visionary and gifted in leadership.

· Endorse, support and work with the culture of Valley View Church.

· Exhibit Christ’s love by developing positive and encouraging relationships within the church body.



· Master’s level or higher degree required from a respected evangelical seminary; preferred Masters of Divinity.

· Licensed as an ordained minister or willing to seek ordination within the first two years of employment.

· Five or more years of experience in pastoral ministry; preferably in roles that involved preaching and leading in a 

  healthy, growing church.



· Be whole-heartedly committed to the ministry of Valley View Church.

· Must pass a criminal record background check.



· PREACHING/TEACHING: Value the importance of the weekly sermon.  Seek to discern God’s message for

the congregation and spend time and effort using professional skills to develop and deliver that message to the best of 

one’s ability.  Employ a variety of expository and topical preaching methods. Teach and facilitate seminars, classes

and workshops as needed to advance the ministry of Valley View Church.

  ·     LEADING: Lead by example.  Provide ongoing leadership development and spiritual oversight to the church.  Be

    personally involved in equipping laymen for ministry though selection, supervision, goal-setting and evaluation of volunteers

    and leaders.

· VISION CASTING:  Seek God’s direction and develop His vision for our church in a way that maximizes the gifts 

and resources available.  Seek to find new ways and additional resources to lead our church in the fulfillment of the 

Great Commission.

· PRAYER:  Seek and promote prayer as a priority, both personally and in the life of the church.

· RELATIONAL:  Work with and relate to lay leaders, volunteers and  the congregation as a whole.  Show evidence of love 

for people in the congregation while reaching out, developing relationships and having compassion for the triumphs 

and problems in their lives.

· COOPERATION:  Exhibit strong inter-relational skills and lead within the context of a congregational style of 

church governance, while being accountable to the church deacons.  Be an excellent recruiter of gifted leaders and a 

strong encourager to all.  Work to accomplish the vision of the church. 

· EVALUATION/DEVELOPMENT:  Continually evaluate effectiveness of programs and propose creative ideas for improvement. 

Offer overall vision to develop and grow ministry.  Spend time in personal study in order to expand relevant knowledge and keep 

current with latest trends in ministry.

· BUDGET:  Participate in the planning of the church budget in cooperation with the trustees in preparation for congregational




· Semi-monthly compensation. 

· Valley View Church can offer $45,000 total package to be paid as the pastor sees fit (salary, housing, medical expense, etc.), with 

the understanding that the amount will need to increase significantly as the church grows.



· The church will provide some  professional expenses and will budget for growth.

· Valley View has a small remnant of committed folks that are ready to follow the leadership of right pastor.  The 

building (seating just under 250) is paid for and has many updates.  There is a beautiful, well maintained outdoor sanctuary.  

· The church is located on a main thoroughfare out of SE Cedar Rapids.   There are at least 125,000 unchurched 

people within a 10-mile radius of the church.
