Alexander Family History

"The Scots-Irish had a system of religious faith and worship which has ever borne
an inflexible front to illusion and mendacity,
and has preferred rather to be ground to powder like flint
than to bend before violence or melt under enervating temptation."

J.A. Froude, 19th century historian

Surname Information

Alexander as a surname is an Anglicised form of the Scottish Gaelic MacAlasdair.   Other spellings include:  Alexandre, Alesander, Alesandre, Elexander, Alaxandair, Alasdair, and Alexandar.

In the "Records of the Accounts of the City of Edinburgh", 1435,  is the earliest known written record of the Alexander family name.  During the reign of King James 1 of Scotland, 1406 - 1437, William Alexander is listed.

Alexander researchers today have found evidence that the Scots-Irish Alexander line, of which our family belongs, descended from Clan Donald in the Western Isles of Scotland.  John Dubh of Clan Donald, took the name of Macalister, when he was the fourth Lord of the Isles. This same John Dubh was appointed Constable of Tarbert Castle in Kintyre.  The appointment was made by Colin Campbell, the Clan Campbell Chief.   Later, John Dubh became the first Chief of the newly-formed MacAlisters of Loup in Kintyre,  who ruled over all the MacAlister families.

Tarbert is located on the Kintyre peninsula, in the area of Argyll and Bute, Scotland.  It is an old fishing village, on a land-locked bay, on the west coast of Scotland.

Paul McCartney’s song ‘Mull of Kintyre’ was created here, the Mull of Kintyre being the southernmost tip of Kintyre, where mist does indeed roll in from the sea. His farm is in an isolated area near Campbeltown, the principal town in Kintyre.

Immigration & Migration

The Alexander's of our family line are Scots-Irish.  Our knowledge of them begins with John Alexander who was born in Tarbert, Kentyre, Scotland and died in Eridy, Donegal, Ireland.  Two generations later, our Alexander ancestors immigrated from Waterford, Ireland to Maryland on Oct 07 1677.  They arrived on the merchant ship "St. George".  They first settled at New Munster Manor, Cecil County, Maryland and later moved to Coddle Creek, Cabarrus County, North Carolina.  From there they purchased land in Sugar Creek, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.  Our direct line of the family finally settled at Arial, Pickens County, South Carolina.

Paul McCartney 'Mull Of Kintyre' Lyrics

Mull of kintyre
Oh mist rolling in from the sea,
My desire is always to be here
Oh mull of kintyre
Far have I traveled and much have I seen
Dark distant mountains with valleys of green.
Past painted deserts the sunsets on fire
As he carries me home to the mull of kintyre.

Mull of kintyre
Oh mist rolling in from the sea,
My desire is always to be here
Oh mull of kintyre

Sweep through the heather like deer in the glen
Carry me back to the days I knew then.
Nights when we sang like a heavenly choir
Of the life and the time of the mull of kintyre.

Mull of kintyre
Oh mist rolling in from the sea,
My desire is always to be here
Oh mull of kintyre

Smiles in the sunshine
And tears in the rain
Still take me back to where my memories remain
Flickering embers growing higher and higher
As they carry me back to the mull of kintyre

Mull of kintyre
Oh mist rolling in from the sea,
My desire is always to be here
Oh mull of kintyre

Mull of kintyre
Oh mist rolling in from the sea,
My desire is always to be here
Oh mull of kintyre
