Announcement

Dear VERA Presenter and Members of the Educational Community in Virginia,

As you know, Governor Ralph Northam has declared a state of emergency for Virginia given the potential arrival of Hurricane Florence.  While we do not know the extent to which Charlottesville will be affected, we understand that even if Hurricane Florence diminishes in ferocity, many have concerns about travel in strong winds and rain with possible flooding and falling trees.  In addition, we understand that people will want to stay with friends, family members and/or pets. For these reasons, the Executive Committee of VERA has determined that cancelling the conference is in the best interest of all. This is a first in the history of the organization!

Even though we will not meet this week, we would like to recognize several individuals.  First, we would like to thank Dr. Pam Moran for her willingness to be our keynote speaker.  In addition, we would like to recognize Dr. Jacob Bennett, University of Virginia, who is the recipient of the Distinguished Paper Award (2017) and Dr. Michael Jarvis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, who is the recipient of the Brenda Loyd Dissertation Award.

We appreciate that presenters from throughout the Commonwealth have prepared thoroughly for the conference and we would like to support their efforts and ensure that their respective colleges and universities recognize the dissemination of their research throughout Virginia.  So that these efforts are not lost, the VERA Executive Committee is working on an alternate plan.  At a suitable time, we will contact you with further details.

Ms. Angela Mayer at the Doubletree in Charlottesville has changed the room cancellation time to 24 hours prior to arrival rather than 48 hours for the September bookings.  It is your responsibility to cancel your reservations if you have booked them for September 12 or 13.  If you are presenting with someone who is not listed on this email, please contact your co-presenters so that they can make other arrangements. Feel free to contact any member of the Executive Committee if you have additional questions.  Good luck with Hurricane Florence and stay safe!

Sincerely,
