UWO Extragalactic Journal Club

The Extragalactic Journal Club (EJC) meets every two weeks to discuss current and historical papers on extragalactic topics.

For Summer 2023 we are meeting every other Thursday at 14:00 EST (in-person in PAB 108 and/or on Zoom - see Slack for details).

Format for each meeting:

The discussion leader will have 15 minutes (at most) to introduce the paper.  As well as discussing the content of the paper, the presenter should pick one key concept from the paper and try to explain it using the whiteboard. Here are some key questions you should use to focus your introduction:

(1) Why is this topic important/interesting?

     - give some context for the project

(2) What did they do?

     - pick one or two key figures that illustrate the main result(s) of the paper

(3) What was cool?

     - what were you struck by?  (a new technique, a clever interpretation, gorgeous data)

(4) What seemed shady?

    - were there any assumptions that you didn't like? did something not make sense?

(5) What's next?

     - briefly talk about possible future work that would advance this subject

If you are a participant who is not leading the discussion, please come to EJC with one or two questions or comments to keep the discussion going.

See the "Current Schedule" link for information about the next meeting date. See the 'Readings' link to know what paper we are reading (presenters: please remember to update this!)
