Best Of The West April 11-13, 2014

As the sun peaked over the Wasatch Mountains and filled the blue sky with warmth the first braces headed to the blind. Pointing dogs from all over the west could be seen staked out around the parking loop at Wasatch Wing and Clay. It was great to see some friends from out of town and make a few new ones. The fields were planted the judges ready and just like that the 7th annual Best Of The West NSTRA Trial was ready to start.

"A"field would Stack up with Tracy Nielson's Cheeto in first with a 924.5. Cheeto is only one 3 point win away from the Champion Certificate. In Second place was Shaun Heaton's “Belle”, and in third was Cheryl Higham's Murray handle by husband Allen.

Angie Wonnacott's “Sunnie” drew first brace in "B" field against a nice pointer from Az. Sunnie, handled by Bret Wonnacott had a truly amazing run going 6/6 and a back scoring 1176.66 to set the mark all others would have to beat. The closest anyone would come was Troy Anderson's “Ditch” Who scored 854. Bret Wonnacott's Tic settled in at third. Congrats to Sunnie on what would be a great run at any draw but a truly amazing one in the first Brace of the trial. Sunnie got her first win and finished the weekend with 7 new points. Congratulations to Troy for a fine finish as well and his second placement in as many trials. That was Ditches first placement.

Shane Neilson handled a dog he recently purchased in "C" field to a win with a 895. I think I over heard him say it was his first win. He Credits Randall Bennett's training for the win. I don’t know what Shane paid for ol' Ben but whatever the cost I think it was money well spent. Congratulations to Shane and Ben on the nice win! Rocco Petrocco's “Willy had a nice run to get the second place, and Maureen Goodrich's “Seven”, handled by Kaycee Goodrich was third. Kaycee and Seven are becoming regulars in the winners photos.

Perhaps Saturday April 12 should be known here after as Murray day because that is what it was. The Rocky Mountain region's Cheryl Higham's dog

Murray handled by her husband Allen put on a rarely seen spectacle of magnificence sweeping all three fields. One brilliant run after another left the rest of us fighting for second. Murray scored 817, 1233, and 1160 to dominate the day. Murray headed back home having won 11 new points and completed his 4X CH. Congratulations to the Highams and their wonderful dog Murray on a weekend well played!

The rest of the placements on Saturday included a second place in B and C field for Tom Kosmac's Aggie. Angie Wonnacott's “Sunnie” found a second in A field, and Brad Jenkins handled Dan Felters “Rev” and “Raz” each to a third place. Rhett Collins was able to get his young dog Gunner qualified for the regional with a third place in C field. That is Gunners first placement. Congratulations to all!

At the end of Murray day we had a party of sorts in the clubhouse. Lance Neilson revealed a new hair style we hadn't seen, and we all had a lot of laughs while eating good food with good friends. We Raffled of some Items to raise a little money for the club. Rhett Collins won the big item. It was a GPS collar. Ironically he had one stolen out of his truck a short time ago. Sometimes things just work out.

After two really pleasant weather days on Sunday the Mother Nature got angry. The wind blew hard all day and we all struggled to get through it. Many dogs were D.Q.d mostly because they couldn't hear their handlers. All the dogs struggled in the wind and the scores showed it. It was really hard on judges as well. Thanks guys for sticking it out on that day.

Arizona’s Debbie Carnahan had a nice run scoring 877.1 with her dog Ruby in “A” field for the win. Tracy and Lance Neilson always battling against each other came in second and third in that field. R2 with the 2nd and Cheeto settled for third.

In "B" field Shane Neilson and that Ben won another one over Bret Wonnacott's Tic and Cheryl Higham's Murray.

In “C” Field Art Trujillo was able to get his young dog Fiona a win with a nice run. Congratulations to Art and Fiona on the first of many placements. Angie Wonnacott's “Sunnie was second, Dave Hackman's “Cash” finished third.

This was a long, but wonderful three days of trialing, and it took a lot of people to make it happen. We would like to thank everyone that helped, and especially Maureen for taking on the chairman responsibilities. Thank you to everyone that drove for long hours to get here as well. It was great to have you. Please know when you come back you will be among friends.
