What a difference a year makes...last year, 2023 Frozen Toes lived up to it's name with driving snow and blizzard conditions. This year, we had sunshine and mid-40's for afternoon temperatures. Regardless of the weather, the annual Frozen Toes Trial kicks off the trial season and what a great start it was. We had exceptional dog work, great camaraderie and just plain fun. It's been a couple years since we were able to host a chukar trial, as its always fun to handle dogs with the same gamebirds most of us are hunting this time of year.
We want to thank Cade Allen for his work as the Trial Chairman, Dennis Haggard and Angie Wonnacott as the Field Marshals, Glenn Smith for planting birds and Lance Hansen, Josh Morris, Cade Allen, Joel Cartwright, Angie Wonnacott, Lance Neilson, Troy Anderson and Lynn Jeffers for judging. Without each of you this trial would not be possible.
We were able to hold a judging seminar on Saturday evening and would like to thank Josh Morris and Joel Cartwright for their excellent instruction and knowledge as we look to add new judges to our region.
The theme for this year's Frozen Toes was veteran handlers, with both new and experienced dogs. Usually we have a pretty good mix of new and veteran handlers, but all the open podium spots this weekend went to handlers that have been playing this game for quite a few years.
On Saturday, Ryan Taylor and his 2 dogs, Prince and Vox, swept the 1st place podiums by winning both fields. Vox had and incredible run in A-field, tallying up 1,065 points on his way to victory. Anytime a dog scores over 1,000 points, you know it was a special run. Meanwhile, over in B-field, Prince went on a 4-bird run and edged out 3 other dogs with 4-bird runs to take home the top spot. Prince's run is a great example of where higher scores in obedience, ground coverage and style can make all the difference. Congratulations to Ryan Taylor and both his dogs on a great day.
On Sunday, our friend from the Northwest Region, Jeremy Cloud and his dog Gus took top honors in A-field. The win elevated Gus to his 3X NSTRA Championship. Congratulations to Jeremy and Gus on a great run and a great (but ongoing) NSTRA career. We hope to see you out for other Utah events.
Dennis Haggard has been a part of Utah NSTRA for several years now and works as hard as anyone to help our region be successful. In fact, back in 2022, his dog Yash was only the 2nd drahthaar ever to achieve a NSTRA Championship. Yash has since retired, but Dennis is back with 2 young setters and on Sunday, his dog Kevin had a great run scoring 766 points and earning the top podium spot in B-field. This was only Kevin's 2nd ever brace making the win very impressive. After judging most every trial last year, it is great to see Dennis out handling dogs. Congratulations to both Dennis and Kevin.
Other podium spots earned over the weekend include Bret Wonnacott and Snaps (2nd A-field Sat), Lynn Jeffers and Oakley (2nd B-field Sat), Kelly Irons and Cinder 2X (2nd A-field Sun / 3rd B-field Sat), Troy Anderson and Rowdy (2nd B-field Sun), Lance Hansen and RIP (3rd A-field Sat), Cade Allen and Annie (3rd A-field Sun) and Jeremy Cloud and Woodrow (3rd B-field Sun). Congratulations to each of these handlers on their podium finishes.
In the Amateur division, Lance Hansen and his dog Remi swept Saturday's 1st place podium spots by winning both fields while Rich Lowe with Sadie and Dennis Haggard with Kevin took top honors on Sunday. Congratulations gentlemen on your 1st place finishes.
Other podium finishes in the Amateur division include Josh Morris and Coco (2nd A-field Sat), Glade Olsen and Marlo (3rd A-field Sat), Mike Workman and Pepper (2nd B-field Sat), Jeremy Cloud and Woodrow 2X (3rd B-field Sat / 3rd B-field Sun), Tom Kosmack and Kilo (2nd A-field Sun), Dale Lund and Chief (3rd A-field Sun) and Troy Anderson and Rowdy (2nd B-field Sun).
Tom Kosmack and Kilo's 2nd place finish was Kilo's first time placement, Congratulations Tom and Kilo.
Glade Olsen, running his wife's dog Marlo to a 2nd place finish, was participating in his first ever trial as a handler. Congratulations Glade.
Dale Lund and Chief were running in their first ever trial and earned a 3rd place podium finish. Congratulations Dale and Kilo.
