2020 "Frozen Toes" Results

FROZEN TOES TRIAL, DEC 5-6, 2020

As you drove up the dirt road you were greeted with a familiar sight, the tent, the trial trailer, beautiful grounds, maybe even a pheasant or two, and dogs eagerly awaiting their chance to run on a frigid eight-degree morning. With faces old and new, birds in the field, dogs at the line and at the judges’ command of “turn em loose” … the Frozen Toes Trial had begun!

SATURDAY A FIELD

Saturday’s A Field would shake out with Bret Wonnacott and his enthusiastic English Setter Snaps going 4/3 and a back to finish with a score of 762 and 3rd place. This is Snaps first placement and he looks to be a force to contend with. Congratulations Snaps and Bret! 2nd place would belong to Brett Ure’s 1x CH English Setter Cash, he would finish his run with 4/4 and a score of 780.5. Cash is now just 4 points shy of his second championship and looks to be quickly approaching that mark! Congratulations Brett and Cash! But the run of the day in A field would be from Andy Johnson and his Drahthaar, Gus. Gus would finish with 4/4 and a score of 794 to win the field! This would be his first placement and his first win! We look for Gus to be a regular on the podium! Congratulations and enjoy your win Andy and Gus!

SATURDAY B FIELD

The podium for Saturday’s B Field would feature three different breeds at first, second and third place. 3rd would belong to Lance Hansen and his stylish German Shorthair Nelli, who would go 4/4 for a score of 789.33. Nelli is becoming a regular on the podium and Lance and Nelli have become quite the team! Way to go guys! For Jeremey King and his Brittany Fenway, it was their first ever brace in a NSTRA field trial. Fenway has enjoyed a great career in horseback field trials; however, we all know a new venue can be hard to have the same success in. Well, Fenway and Jeremey would make it look like a breeze, going 5/4 to finish with 871 to wrap up 2nd place. Great job Jeremey and Fenway, we hope to see you at many more trials! Bret Wonnacott’s English Setter Tic, took 1st going 5/5 for a score of 973.5 and a win in the field. Completing his 4th championship and then some! Congratulations Bret and Tic!

SUNDAY A FIELD

Sunday’s A Field would feature another first-time placement with Ryan Taylor and his gorgeous English Setter Prince going 3/3 and a back to end with 669.5 and their first placement at 3rd place! We look for Prince to be a contender in this game, congratulations Ryan and Prince! Another Setter would have a great run in A Field and lock up 2nd place, that would be Van Jacobson and his English Setter Jazz, finishing with 4/4 and a score of 744. Congratulations Van and Jazz! The run of the day would come out of the 12th brace and belong to Cade Allen and his Brittany Bo. Bo would go 4/4 for a final score of 767 to win the field! Not only did he win the field but the win also gave Bo the necessary points to become our region's newest NSTRA champion!

SUNDAY B FIELD

Sunday’s B Field would finish with Jared Haddock and his pocket rocket Boone going 5/4 and score 860 to end up at 3rd place! Congratulations Boone and Jared on a great run. It's a very competitive field when 5 birds translate to a 3rd place! Cade Allen and Bo would secure what would end up being their second placement of the day with a 5/5 run totaling at 909.25. Congratulations Cade and Bo! Ryley Johnson was unable to join us this past weekend and sent his German Shorthair, Rip with Braydon Whitely to run in the trial. On Sunday in the 10th brace everything came together for Braydon and Rip going 5/5 and a back for a score of 923.5 and most importantly… a win in B Field! This would be Rips first placement, how sweet it is to start it off with a win! Great work Braydon, Ryley and Rip!

We would like to highlight two dogs mentioned earlier who achieved championship status this past weekend. As competitors we all work towards that ultimate goal of champion, and this weekend Bo did just that! Cade and Bo have worked hard to get here and it’s all finally paid off! Watching Cade and Bo is a thing of beauty in and of itself. They always seem connected and on the same page, often communicating without saying a word. If you ever get the chance to ride with one of the judges make sure you watch them run at least once, you’ll learn a thing or two from it! We look forward to watching them chase championship number two! Phenomenal job to both of you and what a career it’s been so far!

Late Saturday, at the line stood Tic, 11 years young, needing just one point to put the finishing touches on his fourth Championship. You could see it in his eyes, this was his brace. Someone must have lit a fire under him because this dog went out there and he was hot! In Tic fashion he didn’t get one point… but he got three! Tic is Bret’s first trial dog and a special one he’s been. He’s a joy to watch, and a treat to be around. Tic has been an example to many, and he’s pushed people and their dogs to heights they didn’t think possible, and for that we say thank you. Congratulations on an excellent career you both have had!

These trials don’t happen without the help from all of you. This weekend was another example of that from setting up fields, judging, bird planting and everything else a trial throws your way it seemed like everyone played a part. Thank you to Maureen, Cade, Rich, Angie, Brett, and Layne for judging this trial, you guys rock! Another big thank you to our wonderful bird planter Glen! Get that four-wheeler ready to go for February! Speaking of February, our next trial is February 20-21st so get your entries in ASAP to Jared Haddock or Lance Hansen.
