Welcome to the website for U.S. Magnetic Fusion Research (MFR) Strategic Directions

The National Academies of Sciences (NAS), Engineering, and Medicine has been charged to prepare an interim report and a final report focused on the importance of burning plasmas in the future of U.S. fusion energy development, along with consideration of the scientific and engineering challenges and opportunities on the path toward fusion energy, and possible scenarios to achieve that goal.  The NAS charge is located here: http://sites.nationalacademies.org/BPA/BPA_177107 and here.

We are planning 2 community workshops to enable community presentation & discussion focused on the NAS charges.

Workshop 2:  December 11-15, 2017 in Austin, TX

  • Read the draft agenda outline and whitepaper guidance to understand the scope of the workshop
    • NOTE!  You are NOT required to submit a whitepaper to participate in the workshop
    • ...but a whitepaper is required if you request to give a presentation
    • All members of the community are encouraged to attend and participate with or without a whitepaper
  • Register for the workshop (Deadline: July 5, 2017)
    • All participants must register
    • You may register at any time (like right now!), including prior to submitting a whitepaper.  
    • Reserve a hotel room (Room blocks expire beginning June 12, 2017)

    NOTE:  It is expected the Madison workshop will start between 8AM-9AM central time on the morning of Monday, July 24 and end by 1PM central time on Friday, July 28, 2017.
