The Undergraduate Student Initiative for Biomedical Research (USIBR) program at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) is intended to expose minority community college students interested in science to cutting-edge imaging technology. Participants will have lectures given by UCI Faculty in:
* Microscopy * Instrumentation Design
* Optics * Computational data
* Simulations/modeling * Advanced Imaging method
Program Details
Number of Students: 20 undergraduate students will be selected (exceptional High School Students will be considered).
Selection Process: Students will need to submit an application by May 30, 2014. Although all community college students are welcome to apply, this program will give priority to students underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math as defined by NSF*.
Lunch and Coffee Breaks: Students will receive complementary* lunch and coffee breaks. *Sponsored by Olympus America.
Instruments Used: All instruments selected for the research projects are housed or owned by the Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics(http://www.lfd.uci.edu/).
Program Length and Description: This program will run for 8 days at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). The morning of week one (M-F, 9am- noon), participants will attend lectures, while the afternoon of week one (M-F, 1-3pm) and all of week two (M-W, 9am-3pm) they will get a chance to have hands on practical experience. Each student will select a research project to work on and will need completed by the end of the program. The last day each student will present their research project summarizing their results and findings. This program will allow students to have interactive research experience and training on state with Laser scanning microscopes at the Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics (LFD).
Application: Registration and participation is free. Each student will be provided with a student ID, waiver forms to sign for work in the labs, and lab safety training.

· Must be an registered undergraduate student
· Must have a GPA≥3.0
· Priority will be given to underrepresented* minority student
· Students must be willing to attend all 8 days of the program
· Must be interested in Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Systems Biology,
Biophysics, and/or Biomedical Engineering
