*** The first iteration of production servers Google has been built with a low-cost hardware. The vast majority of 271 million shares remained under the control of Google and many Google employees have become millionaires now. Yahoo, a competitor of Google, also benefited because it had 8.4 million Google shares before the IPO. Some people speculated that Google's IPO would inevitably brought changes in company culture. Reasons range from shareholder pressure to reduce employee benefits to the fact that many executives become millionaires immediately. In response to this concern, the co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page promised
The "Plan"
The "Plan"
This is the Google Earth sat image I sent to our friends prior to my surprise proposal with the following instructions:

"To ensure success and surprise, I have outlined the following mission plan in order to best coordinate our covert efforts.

Attached is a satellite image of the target area, including notes on suggested approaches and concealment points. Please excuse the crude MS Paint graphics.

I intend to bring her by car to Granville Island by 1215h. After finding parking I expect to arrive at the Target Entrance Point (see map) by 1220h-1225h. ETA to 'Target Area' is 1228h-1230h.

This means that I would like everyone to be in position no later than 1215h. If you cannot or are not in position by that time, please stay well clear of the Public Market area and all roads leading to it. I cannot predict where I will find parking, but will likely attempt to find a spot at the northeast corner of the main Emily Carr building (by the houseboats).

If you are late, ensure that you carefully approach one of the concealment points (see map) AFTER 1230h.

Cover Story

I am taking her to Granville Island as a stopover before taking her to the (imaginary) Helly Hansen Factory Sale on 4th Avenue. I will suggest we get a bite to eat at Granville Island, therefore requiring a trip to the Public Market. I heard about this "sale" from a friend and will tell her that it is an invite-only sale.

I plan to park the car, and bring her straight to the Public Market through the main entrance (see map). I realize that she may get sidetracked and wish to go to Paper-Ya (in the Net Loft building, just south of the Public Market, across Johnson St.), but I will make all efforts to avoid deviation from the Target Route. In any case, please avoid the Net Loft building and the surrounding area.

I will try to follow the route outlined and take her to the Target Area after picking up some bread or ice cream.

If you or any member of your party are caught ( i.e. spotted) before we reach the Target Area and before 1230h, you are to disavow any and all knowledge of this mission. Act naturally surprised at "coincidentally" meeting us. Please explain that you have a friend(s) to meet and will catch up with us later and excuse yourself. Proceed to one of the 3 concealment points (see map).

The three concealment points highlighted in the sat image will offer different perspectives of the Target Area. CP#1 is the closest and as such the most dangerous; approach with extreme caution, bearing in the mind that northern tip of the Public Market (where Food Court is) has a glass viewing area. Round the corner at CP#1 carefully and ensure that she cannot see you from your position.

CP#2 is just at the corner of the alleyway between the Arts Club Theatre and the Revue Theatre Cabaret (where Theatresports is held). Use this corner to conceal yourself, while peaking around to view the Target Area.

CP#3 is the farthest at about 230 feet and is concealed simply by distance. This location is almost directly under the Granville Street Bridge and can be reached by proceeding up Witness Route #2, then turning right before the Aquabus landing. This is my primary recommendation for concealment, as you can have a large group remain out of sight, while you can see our movements at the Target Area. You may need to bring binoculars for this position.

Please stay OUT of the Public Market. We will be roaming inside the Market. If possible and if you are skilled at surveillance, feel free to track us as we enter the Market and when we exit. The challenge is to maintain line of sight on us, while avoiding our gaze.

Mission Conclusion

If everything goes according to plan, you will approach us after I have slipped her engagement ring on. We will dance and sing 'Kumbaya'. And then we will head to Sandbar for lunch (reservations made for 1300h). Please bring a camera if you have one, a picture of her reaction to all of this would be pretty nice.

- On that day, if there are any changes to this plan or an emergency mission abort, I will text or call a pre-designated central communications specialist. Please e-mail me your cell phone # so I can pass it on for this person to contact you in case of changes.

- Please remember the importance of keeping this secret from her. I don't want her to be suspecting anything at all. If she calls you or you happen to talk about your activities for that day, kindly explain that you are occupied with something else on the other side of town.

- In case of rain, I plan to alter the Target Area only slightly, if none at all. The Granville Island location will remain unchanged.

Thank you once again and I hope everyone has fun! Please e-mail or call me if you have any questions or suggestions for mission plan modification."
