About Marion Russell Smith

M. R. Smith was an American myrmecologist (one who studies ants). Dr. Smith received his bachelor’s degree from Clemson University and his Master’s degree from Ohio State University in 1915 and 1917 respectively. M. R. Smith worked a few extension, crop insect and USDA related jobs before starting his Ph.D. which he completed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1927. This dissertation was titled “Ants of a typical middle-western city, with particular reference to the house infesting species”.

After receiving his Ph. D., Dr. Smith went on to be an associate professor, researching ants and teaching in Mississippi. Later he worked at the Division of Insect Identification, Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C.  He took several other intermittent jobs dealing with house-infesting ants and collectively published 150 articles, including the bulletin “House-infesting Ants of the Eastern United States”.
