2014 Bookmark Contest
In honor of School Library Month, Upsala High School’s Cardinal Media Center held its 5th annual bookmark design contest. The contest was created to encourage and recognize students’ creativity and to get some great bookmarks for the Media Center. The contest was open to Upsala students from grades 5-12, which the library serves. Designs were required to use original artwork and have a theme about books or reading. This year’s American Libraries Association theme for Libraries month is “Lives Change @ Your Library”.
Staff voted on the designs by blind voting (viewing artwork without names) for their top choices from 1st through 3rd. The voting was especially close again this year between first and second place with only a few points separating the winners.
This year’s first place winner has the honor of having won first place for the second time. Annika Gunderson, seventh grade, created the winning design. Her colorful design used the slogan “I love to read.” Annika received $10 cash, a book, poster, plus 10 copies of her bookmark.
Audrey Thomas, 5th grade, received the second place award for her “Reading takes you beyond imagination” design. The second place award was $5 cash, a book, a poster and 10 copies of her bookmark.
Third place went to Alexis Krebs. She had a great mixed media design which had the slogan “Use your imagination –READ!” The third place award was a choice of a book and poster, plus 10 copies of her bookmark.
Honorable mention goes to Kailee Janssen for her design, which used the slogan “Follow your rainbow.” There was only one point separating her entry from third place.
The winning entries have been printed and will be used with checkouts through this and next school year. All of the entries are on the Cardinal Media Center website at https://sites.google.com/site/upsalamedia/.
