On Monday, the UP Robotics club attended an advance showing of the new movie "RoboCop". There was much excitement going into the theater, past the FRC FIRST robotics team and among all the press reporting on the movie. The film itself was a mixture of heart-thumping action and a thoughtful take on the future of robotics, in which artificial intelligence threatens the importance of the human condition.
We have been offered a special opportunity to attend an advanced showing of the new ROBOCOP movie coming out next month. The showing is on at Lloyd Center Theater.
To attend, you will need to sign up, as there are limited seats and we need to arrange transportation. We will have a sign-up sheet available this week at the general and technical meetings onin Franz 214 and in Shiley 301.
Synopsis: In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years, but have been forbidden for law enforcement in America. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) – a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit – is critically injured, OmniCorp sees their chance to build a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine.
