The Upper Falls News is an email newsletter about what's going on in our village.  The Upper Falls News is brought to you by the Upper Falls Area Council but it's intended to cover any and all news in the village.

One Hundred Carolers - Have you heard of the Million Man March?, or 10,000 Maniacs?, or 1000 Points of Light?, well we'd like to see 100 Upper Falls Christmas Carolers at the Depot  Join your neighbors for Christmas carols, hot chocolate and cookies, and the lighting of a neighborhood Christmas tree on Monday night from 6:30 - 7:30 at the corner of Oak And Chestnut Streets.

Bring an ornament (or ten) for the tree and a donation for the Newton Citywide Food Drive.  Thanks once again go to our great neighborhood businesses who hatched this plan - Henry & Kim at the The Depot Coffee Shop and Seana at Dunn Gaherins want to wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and a Happy New Year, so come on down and sing your hearts out.

Echo Bridge Bluegrass Drones - Upper Falls neighbor Ed Gardner has a pretty sophisticated video drone that he's been flying regularly around here.  Upper Falls'er Mark Bridger used to have a bluegrass band that recorded a song called "Echo Bridge".  Put the two together and this is what you get.

Watch Those Pets - Sara Ramirez just sent this along tonight - "I just saw a coyote cross High Street and run west through our back yard towards the church property (towards the river). While it was heading away from most of us, we should be aware that it is in the area".  Thanks Sara

Cut the Ribbon and Start Playing - Two weeks ago, the newly refurbished Emerson Playground was opened for business.  A crowd of neighbors, elected officials, city and state staff and a mob of kids from the Countryside Childrens Center were there to celebrate.  They cut the ribbon, the kids charged in and took it for a test drive.  It looks like it's a bit hit with the little ones.

Way Cool History Project for Thurston Rd - Jesse Crandall from the Countryside Childrens Center came up with this idea for a history project for the kids.  Look for it sometime in the spring.

Neighborhood Stories - Our new Upper Falls Newton Nomadic Theater held it's first Nomad Story Slam event last month at Gregorian Rugs.  Upper Falls was well represented.  Among the 21 storytellers that night were four Upper Falls'ers.  Take a listen to the stories from Kate Carney ("If you need help, ask a priest"), Jane Aransky ("My most embarassing moments", Patrice Westrate ("Haunted by my underwear") and Jerry Reilly ("Bob and Yoko") or listen to them all here.

If you missed this one, come to the next Nomad Story Slam on Fri Jan 23, 7:30 PM at Gregorian Rugs.  Just come to hear the stories or throw your name in the hat to tell one - five minutes, must be true, and the theme is "moving on".

Pangur the Cat is Missing - Have you seen him?

Biltmore's Back In Business - The Biltmore was shut down for a week or so while they refurbished the interior.  The new improved Biltmore opened back up this past Thursday and is now sporting a new sign out front and we saw lots of new furniture being carried in the door.

Calling All Community Minded High Schoolers - The Upper Falls Area Council approved the creation of the Ken Newcomb Upper Falls Book Award which will be awarded annually in the spring to a community minded high school junior.  More details will follow soon.

New Restaurants in the Hood - Two new restaurants recently opened on Needham St - UNO Fresco, 300 Needham St. & Five Guys at the corner of Tower Rd. &Needham St.

Buddy Can You Spare a Can - The 2nd Annual City Wide Food Drive to Support Newton Families will be taking place from November 24 - December 31!   Please consider a donation of non-perishable food and toiletries. Drop your donations at one of the Upper Falls drop off spots -  Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce 281 Needham St (Mon.-Fri. 9am-5pm) or the  Newton Fire Station 7 144 Elliot St. (Mon.-Fri. 8:30am-6pm) or bring it to the Christmas tree lighting/caroling (above) on Monday night.

The End of a Long Run - Upper Falls new traveling Newton Nomadic Theater closed out it's twice extended run of "Faith Healer" with a fabulous closing night party performance at Dunn Gaherins a few weeks ago.  Dunn Gaherins and Better Life Food sponsored the night and gave all the tickets away free to Upper Falls residents.  Congratulations to those who scored tickets, our regrets to those who got there too late - the tickets were all gone within minutes.  Many thanks to Dunn Gaherins and Better Life Food for once again throwing a great neighborhood party.
