The Upper Falls News is an email newsletter about what's going in our village.  The Upper Falls News is brought to you by the Upper Falls Area Council but it's intended to cover any and all news in the village.

Upper Falls Trivia - What is now Route 9 was built as The Worcester Turnpike, a toll road for stagecoaches and horses in the early 1800's.  Though it was a toll road, not everyone had to pay.  Who got to ride for free? (answer below)

Local Art - Once a year, many local artists open the doors of their studios and welcome everyone in for Newton Open Studios.  This year it will be on Sat May19 & Sun May 20.  You can spend an entire day bouncing from studio to studio and see an amazing variety of every kind of imaginable art and meet the folks that create it.   Be sure to visit Upper Falls own Elizabeth Carter, 48 Cottage St who create all sorts of sculptures, monoprints and collages.

Echo Bridge is the Answer - Three Newton born high school friends  (class of 75 and 76) were reunited last Saturday night.  Scott Wilson from Auburndale (now of West Roxbury), Mark Medlar from West Newton (now of Mashpee MA) and Gerald Lomax of West Newton (now of Vista, CA) made plans to see each other last weekend.  Gerald has been living in California for the last 25 years but was planning to come to Boston.  He said he'd call when he got here and they could make some plans.  Last Saturday, Mark answered the phone and Gerald said I'll give you $100 if you can guess where I'm calling from.  For no good reason that he can think of, Mark blurted out "Echo Bridge", and later that night when the trio reunited, the well heeled Mr. Lomax handed over a crisp new $100 bill.

Lost & Found - By the end of the Upper Falls Greenway cleanup two weeks ago, a number of tools changed hands and at least one treasured item was lost.  If this long handle lopper is yours, send an email and we'll get it back to you.  One volunteer also lost a wooden bracelet on an elastic band that had sentimental value to her.  If you happened to have found it, please email Upper Falls News.  Also let us know if anyone found a red handled pair of pruning shears.

First Destroy It - The rebuilding of the Hemlock Gorge sluiceway dam at the bottom of Ellis Street continues.  First they stopped the flow of the river into the sluiceway with an ingenious temporary dam.  Now the work crew has destroyed the whole old crumbling dam and dumped all the big pieces of concrete a ways up Ellis St in a temporary dump that they've lined with gravel.  For a little dam this is quite a big project and is interesting to watch it unfold.

Book Your Babysitter - Tickets are on sale for Countryside School's Spring Fling on Friday, May 18 - a night of comedy along with both a live and a silent auction.  It's their big fundraiser of the year so ....  Order your tickets today!

Upper Falls Newest Restaurant - Jonathan's Bar and Grill opened last Friday night.  The restaurant was opened by Jonathan Glick, a Newton resident and its located on Needham St at the corner of Tower Rd.  If any readers try it out in the coming weeks, send us a note and let us know what you think.  The most intriguing detail on their web page is that they are promising "a live jazz brunch" on Sundays.

Indiana Terrace Parking -At last month's Upper Falls Area Council meeting, Indiana Terrace residents raised issues having to do with nearby business folks parking on the street and causing various problems.  The Area Council has spoken to all of the neighboring business and presented their parking concerns to them.  They will continue to monitor the situation in the months ahead.  In the meantime all residents are asked to contact the Area Council about any issues that come up rather than taking any actions on their own.

Upper Falls Area Council - The Upper Falls Area Council is your voice to the city.  Their next meeting is on Thursday, May 17 at 7pm at the Emerson Community Center on Pettee St.   If you have ideas, concerns, or questions about anything happening in the village, send an email to the council UpperFalls@NewtonMa.gov), come to the meeting, or both.

Send Us Your News - If you have any upcoming events, activities, news, trivia, stories, anecdotes or jokes related to Upper Falls just send them to info@UpperFallsNews.org and we'll include them in the next newsletter.

More Library Info - A few issues back, the trivia question was about the old Upper Falls Library.  Last week a reader sent us information about the librarian, Mrs Gordon.  Here's some more information from Brian Yates about the previous librarian - "Before Mrs. Gordon, the Upper Falls Librarian was Miss Billings, sister of the dentist whose office was in the family house on Indianna Terrace."

Trivia Answer - Here's all the people who got a free ride on The Worcester Turnpike --- " ... any person who shall be passing with his horse and carriage to or from public worship, or with his horse or team to or from any mill, or with his horse, team or cattle to or from ordinary labor on the farm, or on the common or ordinary business of family concerns within the same towns; or any person passing on military duty.  It's a shame the Mass Pike doesn't have all these exemptions.
