The Upper Falls News is an email newsletter about what's going in our village.  The Upper Falls News is brought to you by the Upper Falls Area Council but it's intended to cover any and all news in the village.  If you have any upcoming events, activities, news or stories related to Upper Falls just send them to info@UpperFallsNews.org and we'll include them in the next newsletter.

Upper Falls Trivia - Name the streets in Upper Falls which have multiple street name suffixes (Ave, St, Pl, Rd, Terr, etc)

Mayor's Night Out - Mayor Warren will be at Dunn Gaherin's restaurant (344 Elliot St) on the evening of April 11.  Come speak to the mayor about any city issue that's on your mind.  To schedule an appointment, call the mayor's office at 617-796-1110, or email agoldman@newtonma.gov.  In an effort to accommodate as many people as possible, appointments will be kept to approximately 10 minutes each

Upper Falls Greenway - The Boston Globe ran an article about rails-to-trails projects this week that featured the Upper Falls Greenway.  Meanwhile the city's Greenway Working Group has been meeting over the last month and working on the detailed plans to make this new neighborhood park a reality by next spring.  Upper Falls is well represented on the Working Group with Aldermen Brian Yates and John Rice, three of our Area Councillors (Betsy Hewitt, Dave Ohanian, Susan Huffman) and resident Jerry Reilly.

Upper Falls Recording Studio - Here's a unique performance from our favorite recording studio ... and here's the "B side" from a singer who loves the sound of his own voice

Mass Mega Million Media Mania - Upper Falls Variety was in the media spotlight on Tuesday as the Mass Mega Millions jackpot passed a 1/3 of a billion dollars ($353 million). In the morning a WCVB-5 crew was interviewing Tom O'Shaugnessy and his customers. In the afternoon NECN cameras took their place.  Our own Upper Falls Variety is apparently the "go to" location whenever there's a lottery story to be filmed.  Meanwhile the jackpot continued to rise to over $650 million by the end of the week.  Alas, depite all the attention there was no new Upper Falls almost-a-billionaire in last night's drawing.

Swinging Upper Falls - At the Emerson playground, the swings are hung, the kids are swinging and life is good.  Thanks to the Parks and Recreation Department's recent repairs our children are once again shouting "higher" while our parents' arms get sorer.

The Biz at Braceland - Meanwhile major work is being planned for Upper Falls' other neighborhood playground.  Braceland Park is scheduled for a facelift later in the spring.  The tennis courts will be rebuilt and a new path to the dog walking area on the lower field will be installed.  The tennis court project is expected to start in mid-May and most likely will take about two months to complete.

Upper Falls Area Council - The Upper Falls Area Council is your voice to the city.  Their next meeting is on Thursday, April 12 at 7pm at the Emerson Community Center on Pettee St.   If you have ideas, concerns, or questions about anything else happening in the village, send an email to the council, come to the meeting, or both.

Friends of Hemlock Gorge - The Friends of Hemlock Gorge is a community group that works to preserve and improve the Hemlock Gorge park.  Their next meeting is Tuesday, April 3rd at 7:30PM at the Emerson Community Center.   This month's agenda includes: Spring cleanup (April 21, 9AM), Stone Building windows and power, book sales, adelgids, trail conditions, planting project, new Scout project, and the spillway dam reconstruction

NewtonSERVES - Every year Newton organizes an army of volunteers on a single day for a wide variety of worthwhile projects around the city.  This year NewtonSERVES day is April 29, so take a look at their web site and sign up for one the many projects.  Local Upper Falls related projects include cleanup (brush and trash removal) of the Upper Falls Greenway route and general cleanup at Countryside School.  Pitch in, join your neighbors and SERVE.

Everyone's Favorite Barber - Upper Falls resident Jerry Reilly has been writing an occasional neighborhood column for the Newton Patch.  Here's his latest column about an Upper Falls local institution.

New Patch Column Teaser - Upper Falls residents Maxine and Mark Bridger also published a teaser for their new Patch blog.  Stay tuned to see what their "beat" will be.

Spread The Word - Our goal is to collect email addresses from every resident of Upper Falls as well as anyone else who's interested in the village.  Please help spread the word and urge your friends, family and neighbors to sign up for The Upper Fall News.

Send Us Your News - If you have any upcoming events, activities, news, trivia, stories, anecdotes or jokes related to Upper Falls just send them to info@UpperFallsNews.org and we'll include them in the next newsletter.
