Upper Falls Trivia - When and where did a horse last pull a Newton fire truck? (answer below) Upper Falls Greenway - Following the public meeting on 2/12 at the Emerson, and the Area Council's 9-0 vote in support of the Greenway, the city has begun to organize the project. A project manager is being assigned, a working group is being set up, talks have begun with the MBTA and with neighboring towns that are also working on bike paths. The Greenway is on the way. Imagine an Upper Falls Party - Recently, on the Village14 Blog, people have been planning an imaginary Upper Falls happening - The Big Empty Space festival. Between the Clarks headquarters on Oak St, the railroad line, and the CVS parking lot there's a big empty building. Its roughly a football field wide, a football field long, has a concrete floor and is totally empty aside from support columns. If we could use it for a weekend for some big community event - what would you do with it? Take a look at what people have come up with so far and then send us your own ideas - the crazier the better and we'll include them in the next Upper Falls News. Upper Falls Area Council - The Upper Falls Area Council is your voice to the city. Their next meeting is on Thurs, March 15th at the Emerson Community Center on Pettee St at 7 PM. If you have ideas, concerns, or questions about anything happening in the village come to the meeting and talk to your neighborhood councillors. What's a CPA? The CPA is The Community Preservation Act. It generates a rolling fund of tax money that is dedicated to four specific purposes - affordable housing, historic resources, open space and recreation land. We're hoping the Upper Falls Greenway might qualify for CPA funding and we're looking into it. Meantime the Newton CPA is celebrating its 10th anniversary by holding a public meeting on Tues, March 27, 7-9PM at the Waban Library and posing the question: How would you allocate nearly $20 million for affordable housing,
historic resources, open space & recreation land in Newton over
the next 5 years? Come share your ideas. Refreshments provided!
Also you can take their on-line survey- www.surveymonkey.com/s/NYFZCDH to let them know your thoughts, opinions, and priorities about those four issues. Upper Falls Trivia Answer - In 1918, the Newton Fire Department became completely motorized when the last horse drawn wagon of Hose 7, from the Pettee St, Upper Falls Station was replaced. "It was perhaps an emotional moment for some that day as the last team of fire department horses (#45 and #72) were led out of the firehouse for a final time and transferred to the Street Department" - from Fire Station 7: A Brief History, a brochure that was put together for the recent rededication of the renovated Fire Station #7 on Elliott St. - Thanks to Betsy Hewitt for forwarding this to us and thanks to Brian Yates for the last issue's question about Bobby Braceland. |
